California Governor Gavin Newsom shared the strange origin story behind the infamous “Newscum” nickname, a moniker coined by President Donald Trump.
In a late-night phone call, Newsom claims the president called him to test out the nickname, which he later adopted in his public tirades against.
In a candid interview on “The Rest Is Politics” podcast, Newsom recounted the unusual exchange, which took place late one night in 2025.

If it is a true story, it’s all just a game, a show. Hannity and Newsome are said to talk on the phone all the time. Trump is hemorrhaging support. I fear an extinction level election this year for Republicans and maybe Newsome in 29. God help us.

New Scum, which he is
and
News Cum (which the news media does every time he speaks...)

At the bottom of the rather sparse article, Newsom claims the name came from fellow schoolkids in the 8’th grade. So the real message is that even his classmates way back then knew he was a jerk. That’s how I’m reading it.
Well, there you go. They knew all about him even then.

I voted for him three times and thought we were done with all the foreign adventurism but it’s just turned into the same Bush/McCain neo-con stuff. He’s bombing everywhere. I feel betrayed. He said he’s fixed prices. He’s made progress but things are still too expensive. Vance ran out the next day and said they know things are still too high and they’re working on it. Not his fault, things spiked up under Biden. His numbers are cratering with younger voters and high school graduate white voters. They lost a reliable Republican House seat in Texas. Knew he wasn’t a saint but good grief, I had no idea he knew Jeffrey Epstein as well as he did, he’s mentioned in the Files tens of thousands of times.
