Why 7 GOP senators voted against bill to keep government open past Friday

Seven Republican senators on Thursday voted against advancing a six-bill funding package to keep the government open past Friday, citing concerns about the ballooning federal deficit and what they saw as the failure of the so-called appropriations minibus to significantly cut spending

Sens. Ted Budd (R-N.C.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Ashley Moody (R-Fla.), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Rick Scott (R-Fla.) and Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) voted against a motion to advance the bill, even though it had the strong support of Senate GOP leaders.

The package, which was blocked on a 45-55 vote, would have failed regardless of how the Republicans voted. It needed 60 votes to advance and did not pick up any Democratic support.

Paul said his opposition to the package was driven by “a general complaint about how much government spends.”

“Most of the spending levels have come back either at last year’s level or above. Last year we had a deficit of about $1.8 [trillion], $1.9 trillion. If you vote for these levels, it’s sort of a belief that you think what we’re spending is OK,” he said.

“I think what we’re spending is too much,” he added.

Scott said he opposes Democratic demands to pull funding for the Department of Homeland Security out of the funding package after Democrats negotiated a variety of spending victories for their own side.

He also pointed to what he called wasteful spending in the package.

If Rand really cared about government spending, he’d work for free, like Trump.

Otherwise, it’s all show.

How about we cut 2% from every single place we’re spending? Wouldn’t kill anyone, and it would send a message to tighten your freaking belt.

Common sense but im afraid this has been offered numerous times and they vote against it

It used to be 1% cuts (look up Penny plan)

Now it needs about 6%

He could resign and campaign for someone that shares his beliefs and can afford it.

Members of Congress are entitled to compensation it’s in the constitution

Article I, Section 6 of the U.S. Constitution mandates that members of Congress receive compensation for their services, paid by the federal government, with the amount determined by law. The 27th Amendment further stipulates that any changes to congressional salary cannot take effect until after the next election

An actual 1% cut, plus 5% GDP growth, would actually accomplish a lot. It would balance the budget in ~5 years.

But a 1% cut in social security and medicare would, apparently, cause the nation to collapse. So we just have to go bankrupt or start a war instead. /s

I haven’t crunched the numbers but many experts endorse the Penny Plan and I think it’s a good idea

But now it’s more like a 6% cut needed !

It really depends on growth. I was throwing out 5% becasue that's what the recent quarter looked like. We haven't had 5% yearly GDP in a long time. But if we could get that level of economic growth, it really only would take a 1% cut and 5 years to balance. Rough numbers:

The problem is that it is a political death sentence to cut Social Security or Medicare, so neither party will do it. It is more expedient to let the whole country crash, or tax averyone through inflation and prentend it isn't policy.

So is the President, yet he donates 100% of it back to gov’t (like the military)

Well, I agree that the spending needs to be curbed. If the government does close as a result, then the Republicans need to go home in both houses of Congress.

That way Trump can at least get Republicans in positions of getting judges in positions to replace the left over Democrats now occupting them.

You know that personally? Is that because you're his wife? His on? His evil twin? His anal implant?

“WHY did the ‘Rats achieve spending gains?”

Because we have another CR, not a budget.

Budget = republicans win.
CR = democrats win.

With every CR, Obama smiles down upon us
