ICE arrests at San Diego green card interviews include military spouses
NBC San Diego ^ | December 1, 2025 | Shelby Bremer

As ICE continues to arrest people in San Diego during their green card interviews, the final step in a legal pathway, some of the people taken into custody have been spouses of military members and veterans, including one who said he felt “betrayed” after serving for decades in the U.S. Marine Corps.

ICE has repeatedly said these arrests, which began Nov. 12, are for overstaying visas. But multiple immigration attorneys contend that’s never been an issue before, with an exception in federal law for direct relatives of U.S. citizens, including spouses, who are going through the green card process.

...

On Nov. 18, they had her final interview with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Shasteen said “everything seemed great” until the end, when ICE agents came in, handcuffed his wife and took her away as she cried.

...

“All aliens in violation of U.S. immigration law may be subject to arrest, detention and, if found removable by final order, removal from the United States, regardless of nationality,” ICE said in a statement in response to previous inquiries on this tactic. “ICE enforces immigration law against all unlawfully present aliens — criminal history is not a prerequisite for enforcement. Being unlawfully present in the United States is itself a violation of federal law. This activity reflects ICE’s renewed focus on executing final orders, addressing public-safety threats, and reducing absconder population consistent with law.”

A sympathy piece for immigration law violators.

Personally I'm happy to see our immigration laws vigorously enforced. I've wanted them to be seriously enforced for over 40 years!

spouses of military members and veterans

If you marry a foreigner while on active duty you must "get permission" which means having background checks etc. and then going through the issuance of green cards... It's a big nuisance but it legalizes everything...

If you are veteran you are on your own, but are not excused personally from following the law.

If you marry a foreigner who is in on a tourist visa you have a legal mess on your hands. It can be sorted but often requires you spouse leaving until the immigration issues are sorted out.

Approximately 5% of the U.S. armed services are non-citizens, which is about 68,000 foreign-born individuals as of 2024.

I am sure, they left all kings of stuff out of this article.
The media is usually pretty stupid, but the only thing they are very good at is to twist stories to generate desired feelings!
Usually sympathy to all kind of law breakers or hate for law officers and law abiding citizens.

From the article: ...have been spouses of military members and veteran...

Note the term "have been", versus "are".

Many of these women got a ticket to the U.S. and then dumped their G.I. spouse, fleecing him for half of his worth. It's been going on for decades.

Remind me how this is possible or beneficial?

That's exactly what this piece of propaganda is. Self-righteous indignation and posturing is all it is and he, of all people, ought to know he is being played as a stoolie by the Left Wing media.

No sympathy for someone who's been an illegal here for years or decades and not managed to become a citizen.

Makes you wonder how much they cammed the system out of by evading taxes and getting free benefits.

“The media is usually pretty stupid, but the only thing they are very good at is to twist stories to generate desired feelings!”

BINGO! Your comment applies to just about any subject the media covers.

Regarding the subject story, I do not feel a bit sad over any of this. If a person is illegal, they are illegal as in breaking the law. An being associated with or married to an active duty person is irrelevant.

A previous comment said if you marry a foreigner you have to get permission. I remember this very well. When stationed in Ethiopia young kids would go down town and experience their first physical love experience and want to get married. I recall one case quite well. This kid brought onto the base his fat Ethiopian wife to be with her three kids to get permission. The next day he had orders for Europe and was gone shortly thereafter and never married this lady old enough to be his mother.

NBC is using a version of "costumed" play to garner sympathy for "military spouses."

One should remember some key players in the impeachment attempt aimed at Presidetn Trump -- and NOT forget their uniforms.

There is some absurdity in the article of course.

Someone with “papers”is not an illegal. Going through the process to get a green card and being arrested and hauled out during that process suggests they were never in the process. If someone does not have papers they’re never going to get a green card.

Going through the interview process was just a facade.

If someone has overstayed their visa, they’re on their way out. They cannot get a green card because they have violated that law. If they get married to a citizen they’re still not going to get a green card because green cards are only provided to people who have not violated the law. Marriage alone does not provide a right to be here.

The guy up in the thread that said that getting married to someone who is in the country illegally isn’t going to provide them any shield at all. They’re going to have to leave the country and after a period of time apply for the green card while outside the country.

People would do well to read the requirements for a green card. They don’t just hand them out and they are not refused if people are in compliance with the law.

As for the issue above of how many people are in the military and are non-citizens, that’s the answer right there. They are legal permanent resident aliens, that is, holders of a green card.

But multiple immigration attorneys contend that’s never been an issue before.

Just for general information I had woman who worked for me who (prior to working for me) married an illegal Mexican. To sort it out they both had to go to Mexico and apply for legal residency for him. It took 6 months. I believe she had to go with him to add legitimacy to the marriage (it was legitimate). The point is, that’s how it’s done. This woman and Mexican were able to figure out the legal process to things right. These active military people and veterans should be able to figure it out, too.

If leftists would let ICE go after the many rapists, murderers, carjackers etc., ICE would be so busy they might focus less on cases like this.

If he was in the USA ILLEGALLY, it was a betrayal of the USA and the American People.
