A night of celebration spiraled into panic when two shootings rocked Chicago just hours after the city lit its official Christmas tree.
One person was killed and eight others were wounded on Friday as terrified crowds fled through an area known as The Loop.
The first burst of gunfire erupted around 9.50pm near State and Randolph streets, steps from the Chicago Theatre. Police on patrol heard shots fired into a large group, triggering a stampede.

Holiday fatigue
Shootings here post tree lighting, and in NC post tree lighting.
Nothing says Christmas and goodwill toward men like a good post Christmas tree lighting shooting.
Another in a long list of isolated incidents. Seems like Chicago has isolated incidents every day. Not as many as there were before ICE moved in but still....
But the mayor and governor said Chicago is crime free...
My initial reaction was “uneffingbelievable”. But the I realize that this is normal Chicago...so its no surprise. Merry Christmas Chiraq.
And tonight is the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival. Ideally the little b******s would have had their fill of fun last night.
The herd continues to cull itself.
“Tired! Tired! Tired! Tired! Tired! Tired!”
DImwit mayor Johnson is fine with it.
DImwit mayor Johnson is fine with it.
Who voted for him? Garbage In, Garbage Out.
Does a Christmas Tree lighting with only two shootings qualify as a “mostly peaceful” event? Have to check my AP stylebook...
But they’re culling the rest of us too....
It was just an “isolated incident” says the mare.
“Mayor urges state to expedite transit funding after woman set on fire on Blue Line. 11-20
Mayor Brandon Johnson on Thursday said state funding from Springfield could be the key to increasing safety on the CTA, after a man was charged with setting a woman on fire on a Blue Line train earlier this week.”
>Why don’t you huwite peepo use mass transit?
Beeecause we don’t want to be set on fire?
“Were the shootings near where the tree is? How near?”
Millenium Park (tree location) is directly east of Michigan Avenue; the shootings were in the commercial district itself, a couple of blocks west of Michigan. Doesn’t really matter - the Loop and the popular portions of Grant Park adjacent should be the safest location in the city, but they have also degenerated to Lord-of-the Flies land, at least on all-too-frequent occasions.
All it takes in Chicago is someone looking at someone the wrong way and lead starts flying.
Lighting the Christmas Tree BEFORE Thanksgiving? I’d say that was a justified shooting.
A certain level of collateral damage has been deemed...acceptable...
A Dothraki tree lighting with less than 3 deaths is considered a dull affair.
