Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.) was hit with a federal indictment Wednesday, accusing her of stealing $5 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds to support her 2021 congressional campaign.
Cherfilus-McCormick, who has been under investigation by the House Ethics Committee since December 2023, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Miami and faces up to 53 years in prison if convicted. Using disaster relief funds for self-enrichment is a particularly selfish, cynical crime,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. “No one is above the law, least of all powerful people who rob taxpayers for personal gain.
“We will follow the facts in this case and deliver justice.”

She had to have help from someone in FEMA.

Cherfilus-McCormick and her brother Edwin Cherfilus are accused of working through their family's health care company on a FEMA-funded COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract, and in July 2021, the company received an overpayment of $5 million in FEMA funds, according to the U.S. District Attorney's Office, Southern District of Florida.
The indictment alleged that those funds were routed through multiple accounts to disguise their source, and that a "substantial portion" was used as candidate contributions to Cherfilus-McCormick's 2021 congressional campaign.

In a news release citing the indictment, the Justice Department said Cherfilus-McCormick, 46, and her brother Edwin Cherfilus, 51, worked on a staffing contract funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for Covid vaccinations tied to their family health-care company in 2021, and that the company was overpaid by $5 million in relief funds.
The congresswoman and her brother are accused of conspiring to steal the overpayment and route it through various accounts to conceal its origins. Cherfilus-McCormick allegedly used the money for her own enrichment and to fund a significant portion of her congressional campaign.
Cherfilus-McCormick won a special election in January 2022 to fill the seat of the late Democratic Rep. Alcee Hastings. She has since been re-elected two times to Congress.
Cherfilus-McCormick and another defendant in the case, Nadege Leblanc, 46, also used straw donors to secure additional campaign contributions, funneling other funds from the FEMA-funded Covid contract to friends and relatives who then made donations to the campaign as if they were contributing their own money, the Justice Department said.
