A stunning report from UC San Diego has exposed a dramatic collapse in academic readiness that should alarm anyone who cares about California's education system. The numbers are jaw-dropping: between 2020 and 2025, the share of incoming freshmen requiring remedial math instruction for skills below middle school level surged nearly thirty fold—from about 1 in 100 students to roughly 1 in 8.

The reality check came through placement testing. When UCSD's math department assessed Fall 2023 students in remedial courses, the results were sobering: 25% couldn't solve "7 + 2 = ___ + 6," and 61% couldn't round 374,518 to the nearest hundred. These aren't college-level concepts—they're grade school fundamentals.

Maybe now is my time to start reapplying to colleges. I originally wanted to be a doctor, but I don’t have the money and sure as sh¡t didn’t have the grades due to being hospitalized during half of high school.

Now it looks like I’ll be able to bridge to nursing after working as an EMT for a bit and save a whole lot of money, but if even *I* am a better candidate than current 4.0 students, I may apply to a few places for nursing.

Our son graduated from high school a few years ago with a GPA around 3.85. That only put him in the top 20% of his class. Same GPA when i graduated from my high school would have put him in the top 2 to 3%. Big time grade inflation and a comparison of GPAs to SAT/ACT scores would confirm that.

It’s profitable for the colleges to let in these functionally illiterate “students” because all of the remedial classes are paid for but no credit given. Now these students are on a 5-6 year plan while the schools suck in taxpayer money and the students end up at the end with worthless degrees.

Retired urban public school teacher here. I have mentioned this before. My district now requires everything to be done by calculator. And note the word “requires”. It’s not an option. Students must use calculators, only.

We teachers knew how stupid that was. But our opinions don’t count.

Back when I first started teaching, we taught things like estimating, rounding, and adding fractions by hand. That’s all gone now.

I know a middle school math teacher in my district who got in trouble for telling her students to memorize the times tables (not kidding).

I could tell you 100 stories like that. Woke and incompetent administrators have ruined urban schools. They are beyond saving.

Then the 50 YEARS of (R)N(C)’s “vote for US, we’ll end the DoEd”....& NEVER ending the DoEd (but dip-sh!ts kept putting ‘em back into office *facepalm*). Fact, the (R)N(C) *CREATED* NCLB, Common Core & OTHER ‘education’ fascist programs/edicts (& dip-sh!ts kept putting ‘em back into office...again)

For those things Pres. Trump does proper, like killing the illegal/Unconst. DoEd (no EO, like its creation?? C’mon, youz!), he gets the BIG thumbs-up.
