Iran seizes tanker in Strait of Hormuz, US official says, as tensions remain high in region

Iran seized a Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker as it traveled through the narrow Strait of Hormuz on Friday, a U.S. official said, turning the ship into Iranian territorial waters in the first-such interdiction in months in the strategic waterway.

Iran did not immediately acknowledge the seizure, though it comes as Tehran has been increasingly warning it can strike back after facing a 12-day war in June with Israel that saw the U.S. strike Iranian nuclear sites.

The ship, the Talara, had been traveling from Ajman, United Arab Emirates, onward to Singapore when Iranian forces intercepted it, said the U.S. defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters. A U.S. Navy MQ-4C Triton drone had been circling above the area where the Talara was for hours on Friday observing the seizure, flight-tracking data analyzed by The Associated Press showed.

A private security firm, Ambrey, described the assault as involving three small boats approaching the Talara.

Come on. We could take them out in 5 minutes. What would the neighbors think? They need no rise in the tensions but the Iran gunboats wouldn’t be all that into it.

Think-Venezuelan drug boats sunk. Iran’s nukes taken out and unrest within. Take out a few boats and then see what happens.

Ship owners love flags of convenience. It’s much cheaper than registering their ships in the United States. So owner should contact the Marshall Islands Navy.

Or maybe the US Navy can help. For a fee.
No free lunch.

“ake out a few boats and then see what happens.”

You do realize that Iran could close the Strait of Hormuz very easily?

They have also seized other tamkers in the recent past. Let’s see if they make another move. The option to go after the Iranians is always on the table, and they know it.

Everybody knows how this should end.

Why the hell would they do that?

Do they want to lose their Navy too? That took about 35 minutes back in the 80s. It would take longer today only because there are so few ships we would need to spend a few more minutes finding them.

Agreed. We should get out of our naval treaty of protecting ships flagged with most other nations, so that they ships pay the U.S. fees instead of the cheaper Marshall Islands or Solomon Islands fees. Let Australia protect the Marshall Islands (ships flagged with MI flag), or Singapore (since the ship was transporting to Singapore).

But until we get out of that agreement, we should honor it.

--- "...traveling from Ajman, United Arab Emirates, onward to Singapore"....

Time for the semi-constitutional monarchy of the UAE and the Republic of Singapore which has its own navy to pay for maritime protection. Time for other than the US to provide it for free or even a "small" fee.

The Marshall Islands were a US Possession after WW2. We controlled them until the 80’s. As part of them getting independence, we still provide protection to them.

Instead of bombing their nuke production facilities, we should bomb their water reservoirs.a country cannot live on oil.

he Compact of Free Association with the United States gives the U.S. sole responsibility for international defense of the Marshall Islands. It gives the islanders (the Marshallese) the right to emigrate to the United States without any visa.
