Reminds me of a Willie and Joe cartoon BACK HOME by Bill Mauldin.
Willie is looking at a newspaper whose front page headline is “SOLDIER SLAPS AUNT!”
He says to his wife...”Here is an article about a triple axe murder on page seven. No GIs involved.”
Because the LA press is routinely anti-gun and anti-military; to them, a naked intruder's rights to terrify women in their home, possibly raping or murdering them or causing them psychological trauma by committing a self-defense murder would be the correct virtue.
Normal people read it and think, “thank God he had a gun and was trained how to use it in a potentially deadly situation.”
I hope the heroic veteran receives great care, lots of follow-up and rehab, and makes a full recovery.

He knew how to shoot and kept his wits about him, despite the attack. Being a veteran is helpful in such a context.
