The urban areas of North Carolina have the same issues other cities around the nation with progressive governments are experiencing. The deindustrialization of America since the 1990’s resulted in the loss of middle class factory jobs in rural counties. The service and coding jobs politicians and academics claimed would replace factory jobs never materialized. Tobacco farming also largely disappeared. Immigrants flooded the state taking jobs from poor American in both urban and suburban counties. The public schools were destroyed by DEI and now rank very low nationally. The Obama years intensified racial friction. Crime is becoming rampant throughout the state and is definitely under reported and ignored by law enforcement, the media and prosecutors. Criminals who enter the justice system benefit from lenient plea bargaining and early parole.
Progressives are ruining North Carolina as fast as they can.

I lived in Chapel Hill for a few years.

Once those (and other) things are ruled out, the only conclusion to be drawn is that the exurbs/rural areas are no longer “safe” from urban hoodrats.
Where I live in south-central Tennessee there are a bizillion new mansions (5,000 to 25,000 SF) being built in the surrounding ridges and hollers (that’s “valley” to y’all flatlanders). I know this because I can see it and a friend with a drone has video of many of them. Yes, there is BIG money up/out here.
It’s why I carry 24/7/365, have several M4 -geries scattered around my property and have gotten to know my immediate neighbors (one who owns more guns and gear than anyone I’ve ever known, especially class III stuff), own dogs and have remote motion detector alarms in strategic areas.
