NEW YORK (AP) — TV shows like “Abbott Elementary,” “Hacks,” “Heartstopper,” “The Last of Us” and “Yellowjackets” helped increase the ranks of LGBTQ+ characters on prime time by 4% over the previous season, according to a new study by the advocacy group GLAAD.
This year’s “Where We Are on TV” study, released Thursday, counted 489 LGBTQ characters across scripted prime-time broadcast, cable and streaming shows — up 21 additional characters. It marks a boost after two years of decline, but remains far below the 2021-2022 record high of 637 characters.
GLAAD added that the number of transgender characters on TV has slightly increased from last year to reach 33 — 24 trans women, seven trans men, and two nonbinary characters — but only four trans characters appear on series that have been officially renewed.
The report is the 20th edition of the annual tracking by GLAAD and charts a remarkable leap from just 47 LGBTQ+ characters in the first study. It arrives as President Donald Trump has targeted transgender and nonbinary people with a series of executive orders — including one declaring the existence of two unchangeable sexes — stripping government websites of “gender ideology” an reinstituting a ban on transgender service members in the military.
A recent Gallup poll found 9.3% of U.S. adults identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or something other than straight or heterosexual. The percentage has more than doubled since Gallup first measured LGBTQ+ identification in 2012.
ABC last season had the largest percentage of network LGBTQ+ series regulars — with 12.9% — while Netflix had the most LGBTQ+ characters on streaming, with 177. It found that the eight major streamers added 45 characters from the 327 in the previous period.
The study found that the percentage of characters of color slightly increased …

interesting to note. I stopped watching tv about a decade ago.
And viewership
For the first time, broadcast television has officially fallen below 20% of total TV viewing in the U.S., according to a recent industry report.
Some of this may be due to increase in streaming but no doubt lack of interest in content contributes.
When I last watched TV in 2011 I was watching a show “Once Upon a Time”. They ran an episode with a lesbian love story. That ended the series for me. People’s choices are their own but that kind of programming is an instant turnoff.
What is this “Prime Time” and “TV”?
Plenty of stuff on YouTube to watch. I haven’t watched broadcast TV, other than for some sports in well over 30 years.
Same here. Any movie or tv show... as soon as a queer shows up, the show goes off.
I never watch broadcast television. I stream everything and it is what I want to watch.
I stopped on the same episode.
I haven’t watched prime time network television since the late 80s. AE, Learning Channel and Discovery Channel sometimes had something good on, but not in a very long time. So, I just stream what I like now. TV programs were ruined by too much propaganda.
I watch a lot of foreign shows now. There are actually some really good series from Turkey, and the women on them are gorgeous, I must say.
I’ve been watching all seasons of “Tales of Wells Fargo.” It aired 1957 to 1962. I’m almost through with Season 6, yet I haven’t seen a single “Brokeback”type incident. How odd is that?
Just beautiful young women throwing themselves at the stoic Jim Hardie. Man, that guy had will power to resist.
The industry is going to eventually realize that those they turn off are not coming back.
Primetime TV is not gay enough apparently.
The ad agency for Nuveen Investments which opens the stock market on CNBC feaures a ‘manly’ woman. Which seems to be New York ad agencies way of pushing the commie sexual agendaa on the rest of us. If Nuveen isn’t part of the sexual bully community - they should change ad agencies or tell them to stop pushing their crap on Nuveen’s dime. Or we can just Bud Light them...
Little Red Riding Hood and Dorothy Gale. Only a sick mind could make those two lovers on a show.
They gave the cute, awkward Librarian a girlfriend on one episode of The Librarians.
So many people I know loved Ozark. When the first episode ended with two men engaged in oral sex? Nope. Never continued. I tried out Get Shorty because I like Ray Romano, but quit a few minutes in for the same reason.
Look at this article. Nearly 500 gay characters—clear over-representation—and these people are still not happy.
It’s a deal breaker for my husband and me, too. Plus woke nonsense of other flavors. We would rather watch older shows that were of better quality.
I think they can’t understand that many..most..heterosexuals are viscerally revolted by homosexual sex acts. I don’t impose my beliefs on homosexuals but I do not need to partake of their content.
Their attempts to normalize gay sex by desensitizing us isn’t working. It’s just destroying the viability of TV & Film industries. It’s more of an issue than it was before the push started.
In general, Hollywood is being woke. They're not allowed to make jokes because they're afraid of offending somebody.
“LGBTQ+ representation on primetime TV grows thanks to shows like ‘Abbott Elementary’ and ‘Hacks’ ... The study found that the percentage of characters of color slightly increased”
which basically means even more straight whites are being pushed out of network TV shows ... does anyone but morons even watch those shows anymore?
