Louisville Metro Police Department chief Paul Humphrey said it’s unclear how long it will take to render the crash site safe for an investigation to take place.
Humphrey said they would not be able to answer any questions regarding the cause of the cargo plane crash, as the investigation will be managed by the National Transportation Safety Board.
The briefing has now ended, and officials were unable to clarify when the next update might be.
There were 38,000 gallons of fuel (about 144,000 litres) on the crashed plane – which had just started its flight – an amount weighing about 220,000 pounds (100,000 kilograms), according to authorities in the press briefing, which has just ended.
The resulting fire is still burning, with the fire department working to contain it and the public warned not to go near the crash site.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear warns people not to go to the site of the crash.
"There may be people that still need to be rescued. Do not be the reason that the first responders cannot get to them," he says.
"There are still dangerous things that are flammable, that are potentially explosive."

I’ll speculate that they had a catastrophic engine failure.
Unfortunately it occurred after the point of no return. Not enough runway to get airborne on the remaining engines and not enough runway to stop.
