At Sunday's triumphalist 'New York Is Not For Sale' rally at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, Senator Bernie Sanders told the crowd of ecstatic Zohran Mamdani supporters that, given the scale of the problems he faces, their icon - and his acolyte - is 'not going to have all the answers.'

He went on: 'Please do everything you can to work with Zohran to make him and his administration the best in the history of New York.'

It was a bizarre and hardly unqualified vote of confidence. Some might even say it had just a touch of desperation. As one of the most inexperienced candidates in living memory to ever run for New York Mayor - let alone win - Mamdani is certainly going to need some advice.

His energy and charisma - not to mention the fatal weakness of his competitors - may well push him first past the finishing post but that's when the hard work will start for a 34-year-old whose previous political experience amounted to pushing into law just three of 20 bills he sponsored in the New York State Assembly.

And who might he turn to for support? Team Zohran does it best to paint their man as a breath of fresh air in America's tired politics, a politician unbeholden either to the billionaires he routinely trashes or other powerful interests - not a Democrat, chorus the more idealistic among them, but a Democratic Socialist.

However, he has intricate links with a web of powerful and, yes, wealthy Democrats - including Barack Obama and billionaire investor George Soros - whose influence with Mamdani may leave his rich-kicking, establishment-bashing supporters feeling a little uneasy.
