Trump answers whether he would run as vice presidential candidate in 2028

President hails Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential successors while criticizing Democratic opponents

President Donald Trump shot down speculation that he would run as a vice presidential candidate in 2028, telling reporters aboard Air Force One that Republicans already have "great" prospective candidates.

Trump made the statement during a gaggle with reporters on Sunday, brushing off questions about whether he would fully pursue such an option. Trump pointed to Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as two potential successors, while denigrating potential Democratic candidates as "low IQ."

"We have great people. I don't have to get into that, but we have one of them standing right here. We have JD, obviously. The Vice President is great. Marco is great, I think. I'm not sure if anybody would run against those. I think if they ever formed a group, it would be unstoppable," Trump said....

...Asked about whether he would run as vice president in 2028, Trump noted that he would be "allowed to do that," but he called the plan "too cute."

"Is it the White House, or the White House counsel's, or your legal position, I guess, that you could do that?" a reporter pressed.

"You'd be allowed to do that, but I wouldn't do that. I think it's too cute," Trump responded.

Trump cannot be elected Vice-President in 2028 because the qualifications for VP are the same as POTUS, and he is ineligible to be elected POTUS after 2028.

Obviously the first salvos of the ‘28 campaign are approx. 1.5 years away, but it’s pretty clear that Trump likes the idea of a Vance-Rubio ticket. I’d be okay with that.

There are no limits on running or being vice president.

He also would not be elected president, if he succeeded the person who was president.

Rubio needs more proving. He was a do-nothing guy that memorized well.

I do not yet feel comfortable with him, despite his good representation since January.

My friends he is raising eyebrows with the help of the reporter asking the question. It’s like tearing up the WH when the left thinks it’s their own property and suggesting it’s ‘everyones’.

“because the qualifications for VP are the same as POTUS”

Okay, so the 12th amendment states: “... no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.”

But the counter-argument, untested in the courts, is that the oriinal intent of the 12th amendment language was to apply the eligibility criteria of Article II, clause 5 (i.e., 35 years old, natural born citizen etc). As the argument goes, the 12th amendment only means the original requirements not the new ones imposed by 22nd amendment ~150 years later. Obviously the SCOTUS has never ruled on this argument, so it’s just academic at this point. I highly doubt that Trump will try it.

Regardless of whether he could run or would run, the trolling is priceless.

Stop throwing cold water on these wonderful memes.

Everyone knows this is his last term - the point is to cause Democrat ‘splody heads. Get with the program.

“There are no limits on running or being vice president.”

That is not the way I read the 12th amendment: “But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.”

Setting that aside, all the “maybe” talk of President Trump returning to national office in 2028 completely eliminates the notion that he is, or will become, a lame duck.

President Trump will be a powerful and dangerous opponent of Democrats until his last day in office - and beyond.

Personally, I agree with you, although there is an argument that there is a way around that because the two-term prohibition doesn't state that such a person is "ineligible" for the Presidency -- only that they cannot be elected to the Presidency more than twice..

I agree with Trump that this maneuver would be "too cute", and that SCOTUS would agree with that determination.

I’m predicting a Rubio-Vance ticket...based on age and the experience that Rubio has accumulated.

Trump cannot be elected Vice President in 2028. It's a dumb idea--just as it was a dumb idea when William F. Buckley suggested that Barry Goldwater in 1964 should nominate Ike as his Vice Presidential running mate.

But there is no limit on how many terms a Vice President can serve. So J. D. Vance could serve 4 years as Trump's VP, then 8 years as DeSantis' VP, then 8 years as Rubio's VP, then 8 years as Barron's VP. But he may decide to retire before that.

Why?

Uou'd not only be exploding a lot of "liberal" heads, but a lot of swing voters' heads as well, and likely some GOP members of Congress. You'd be validating -- deliberately -- all the worst things they say about Trump. Just because you think its funny.

If Vance wins 2028, Trump and the Republicans should pretend that they'll make Trump Speaker of the House. And as soon as that enters the TDS news cycle, Vance and his VP should pretend simultaneously that they're about to announce retirement. LOL
