Federal workers lined up around the corner outside of the Capital Area Food Bank in Southeast Washington, D.C., on Friday after missing their first full paycheck since the now 24-day government shutdown began.
The food bank, set up specifically for federal workers, provided boxed meals, household goods and personal hygiene items to over 250 federal employees on Friday, according to Wil Stroman, a local pastor who is helping organize a food bank for federal workers every Friday until the shutdown ends.
Anthony Speight, who is furloughed for the first time in his 17 years as a federal employee, said that he “never thought” he would be in a position to ask the community for help.
“I used to be a grants administrator, administrator of grants across the federal government, giving assistance, and now I’m in line requesting assistance,” Speight told NBC News.
If federal workers aren’t getting paid, he said, members of Congress should have their paychecks withheld, too.
“Bills continue to pile up. I have car notes, I have children to feed, I have a family to take care of, I have a mortgage to pay, so it’s a lot of uncertainty,” Speight said.
Members of Congress continue to receive pay during the shutdown, though a handful of lawmakers have asked that their paychecks be withheld.
Though resources like the donation-funded Capital Area Food Bank offer some support for federal workers struggling to make ends meet, furloughed worker Pamela Lewis said that going without pay is unsustainable without more government support.

Well-paid federal employees flock to the food banks for handouts after missing a single paycheck. That’s pitiful.
Take your grievances to Der Schumer.
Well, at least it got them off the couch for the first time in five years.
Losers.
Dog and pony show. If you have no savings and federal employee- pitiful and frankly hard to believe
I am probably not that surprised. They probably eat out every day. Have every streaming service. Drive expensive cars. Have debt up the wazoo. Spend money like no tomorrow.
Money is tight for me, but I cut a lot of expenses.
False flag. Obviously these people are actors posing as fed workers out of food after one paycheck. Democrats cannot stoop any lower.
Are these clowns still “working” from home? Prior to the Schumer shutdown of course.
Only diff is they are still at home, but without (boohoohoo) their Fed paycheck being deposited electronically.
Sad trombone time!
If you have to go to a food bank after missing one paycheck, and you are a federal employee, then you are living way above your means. You are also a terrible money manager and probably should seek the assistance of a financial planner.
Don’t they receive unemployment?
The more I think about this, the more pissed off I get. If you’ve been working for the federal government for 17 years and don’t have enough money saved up to cover expenses for at least two months, then you need to be fired for stupidity and poor management skills.
When hubby and I were in our 20s, then no we didn’t have much money saved. We lived paycheck to paycheck and barely covered the basic living costs. But as we advanced in our careers and received pay raises, we saved money for “rainy days” and emergencies. We didn’t try to “keep up with the Joneses” and live beyond our means.
They don’t have any savings and are living hand-to-mouth on a federal paycheck? Isn’t it wonderful how people who can’t handle their own finances want to handle ours?
Miss one check and you need a food bank? WTF?
“They don’t have any savings and are living hand-to-mouth on a federal paycheck? Isn’t it wonderful how people who can’t handle their own finances want to handle ours?”
Bingo!
I’ve got over a years supply of food for 2 in the event of a natural or manmade disaster. It’s called common sense.
I also keep enough cash handy to carry over several months.
If you lose one paycheck and you’re at a food bank you need to take a close look at how F’d up you are.
Anybody really believe they are flat broke, the cupboards are bare and can’t pay their mortgage or car payment....No friends, no family to borrow from...Nothing under the mattress...
