Canada will restart trade talks when 'Americans are ready', says Carney

US President Donald Trump has announced an immediate end to all trade negotiations with Canada over an advert critical of the tariffs he has imposed on the nation.

The advert, sponsored by the government of Canada's province of Ontario, quoted Trump's predecessor, Ronald Reagan, an icon of US conservatism, saying tariffs "hurt every American".

Trump wrote on social media that the advert was "FAKE" and "egregious", adding that trade talks were "HEREBY TERMINATED".

His administration has imposed a 35% levy on many Canadian imports, as well as individual tariffs targeting particular industries like car and steel manufacturing. Ontario has been particularly hard-hit by these.

Trump has allowed exemptions for goods that fall under a free trade agreement with Mexico and Canada that he negotiated during his first term.

But Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney has since his election earlier this year attempted to strike a deal that would ease the US tariffs.

This has been complicated by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who is one of the most vocal critics of the taxes levied on US firms buying Canadian products.

In the minute-long advert published last week, Reagan's voice can be heard narrating over images that include the New York Stock Exchange and cranes adorned with both US and Canadian flags.

The video excerpts a 1987 national radio address by Reagan that focused on foreign trade.

What's in controversial Reagan advert and is it what he really said?

"When someone says, 'let's impose tariffs on foreign imports', it looks like they're doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes, for a short while it works, but only for a short time," Reagan says in the advert.

"Over the long run, such trade barriers hurt every American, worker and consumer.

Carnage thinks this is great. Just one more nail in the Canada coffin, moving it from sovereign nation to globalist geographical area.

Danielle Smith (Alberta) and Scott Moe (Saskatchewan) have basically been the only adults on our side. I remember quite well when the left hated free trade (from about the time of the Ronald Reagan video).

What a load. Canada Tariff’s the shit out of everything with all kinds of protections.

Canadians are now running short on liquor, food, wood. With Tens of thousands of jobs gone because the companies are moving back here those liberal fools call them selves success. All because of the border. They think they are important. Well they are important only to themselves.

They can’t sell their oil to anyone without using American ports so we can make their oil noncompetitive price wise.

Fact is, Reagan did say that. However, the issue comes down to long run versus short run. In the short run, tariffs can go into effect overnight and the supply chain has no time to react. Prices will rise, although by less than the tariff (except for goods that are perfectly inelastic, of which there are few, if any). In the long run, the higher prices will induce domestic suppliers to provide substitute goods at the same or lower prices. The long run varies according to the product. A product that requires a new factory to be built could have a long run of years while another product might be produced with just a few changes in an existing factory. In that case, the short run could be as short as a few days. Most of Trump’s promised employment increased will have longer implementation times.

The important point to remember is that Canada is still controlled by the Rump British empire in London.

Don’t believe me? Just look at Carney’s resume.

And despite never having been elected to any office before, he was parachuted into Ottawa as a 2025 colonialist governor, to deal with the existential crisis known as “Trump.”

I do not how they call some things election interference and some things are not. I remember a Russian firm getting charges for buying a social media ad. Why is this different? There may be good answers, but I do not see them.

Yeah, I was pretty sure somebody would draw Keynes into the discussion. I prefer the definition that the long run is the time needed to adjust output capacity. I might be dead by then, but that because I’m only two years younger than dirt as it is.

Screw Nazi Carney and Nazi Canuckistan.

We'll be ready when Carney has eaten his neighbor's dog and is burning his neighbor's furniture to keep from freezing to death.

Thankfully they hand out individual World Series trophies every year and not the same one every year..

Maybe a Canadian team winning the Stanley Cup at some point could make it a great bargaining chip for Canada.

Canadia is not in the strong position on this. They’re going to run out of money and Alberta is putting together a vote to leave.
