7 people indicted in driver's license cheating scheme at DMV in Garden City

MINEOLA, New York (WABC) -- The Nassau County District Attorney's Office has charged a group of seven people, including DMV employees, on Thursday in an alleged driver's license cheating scheme on Long Island.

Deciding who gets to operate heavy rigs on the roads and highways is not something the New York Department of Motor Vehicles takes lightly.

"Bypassing that safeguard is far from a harmless shortcut, it is a dangerous threat to public safety," said New York Inspector General Lucy Lang during a Thursday morning press conference.

But that's what prosecutors in Nassau County are alleging in a new 51-count felony indictment against seven different people. According to the Nassau County DA's office, the group is accused of engaging in a scheme to cheat on commercial driver's license (CDL) exams and process permits for no-show applicants at the Garden City branch of the DMV.

Among those charged include Kanaisha Middleton, a supervisor at the Garden City branch of the DMV, as well as her sister, Jamie Middleton, who is accused of taking at least 10 different permit tests for no-show drivers.

The video player is currently playing an ad. Surveillance images show Jamie Middleton wearing different disguises, even fake facial hair as she posed as a man who would be applying for a commercial driving permit, but she forgot to take off her fake nails.

"We think it's pretty, pretty poor. The finger nails kind of gave it away," Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said.

7 indicted.
Polygraph every employee with access to the exam and/or licensing process statewide. I’d venture that a lot more than seven are on the take. Perhaps seven aren’t.

NY has an employee program in their prisons, training prisoners for jobs in the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles.

What could go wrong?

Grossly inadequate, but a start.

Someone(s) either gave them instructions or the freedom to operate.

It is statistically impossible that such actions would manifest spontaneously in multiple states, let alone in multiple government agencies. The crimes are being solicited, permitted and $$ changing hands up a chain.

This is a conspiracy and mandates further investigation.

The bare minimum for sentencing should be one day in prison for each day someone was driving around with an illegal license.

Same for illegal licensee. Three years with an illegal license? - that's three years in prison for you.

Everyone else still driving around with an illegal license - you have 10 days to surrender your license. Otherwise, "You're only lengthening your minimum prison sentence."

There’s a new TV show called DMV. This case above might give the producers an idea for an episode in the show.

7 people indicted.

Meaning that, just like the roaches you see in your kitchen, it’s likely that there are many more hiding that you can’t see or catch.

The 7 is just the tip of the iceberg.

"Apparently not," I said, drily.

Everyone around here knows to avoid that specific dmv office at all costs. It’s a total zoo the workers and the clientele.

The stupid sisters---- Kanaisha Middleton, a DMV supervisor, and her sister, Jamie, accused of being paid to take permit tests for no-show drivers; she "forgot "to take off her 2 inch fake nails.

No problem, IL Secretary of State employees will be happy to issue CDL to New Yorkers...or Zacatecans. All that is needed is to properly show your appreciation.

Some pocketed as much as $3000 to do the dirty work, the defendants face multiple felony counts:
<><> impairing the integrity of a government licensing examination,
<><>corrupting the government,
<><>tampering with public records
<><>falsifying business records.
