Reviving the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline from Alberta to the U.S. could play a part in tightening U.S.-Canada energy cooperation, Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Friday.
Carney raised the idea during a Tuesday meeting in the Oval Office with U.S. President Donald Trump on defusing trade tensions, according to a source familiar with the discussions.
"We are looking for areas where the integration of our economies will be better for us both. We have opportunities in the energy sector - there are many possible projects, including Keystone XL, but there are others," he told a press conference.
The proposed pipeline was rejected by U.S. President Barack Obama's administration and revived by Trump during his first term. U.S. President Joe Biden revoked a key permit in 2021 and there is currently no proponent for the pipeline.
Reviving Keystone XL could help improve Carney's relations with the oil-producing province of Alberta, which says Ottawa is strangling the energy industry with such measures as a west coast tanker ban and a proposed cap on emissions.
Asked whether Ottawa could scrap those measures, Carney replied: "It depends".

Here? We all know that-come on!
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song.
-The Kingston Trio.
Who needs it more?
BUILD IT!
I thought all the pipes which were waiting for construction to begin were removed and the project was totally dead.
Resurrecting it will take some time. Brandon stopped it on day 1.
Is this like the fence where all the steel(and pipes) were disposed of?
I guess. All I recall is once the pipeline was killed the company said the project was essentially terminated. I have no idea what happened to stuff left over.
“Who needs it more?”
The sideshow carney barker, that’s who.
[I’m in favor, still.]
This is the “Art of the Deal”. Without pressure, Carney would never give Keystone XL a second thought.
Never should’ve cancelled it.
On the other hand, we should find a way to drink their milkshake!
Alberta doesn’t need this buffoon’s permission. Alberta’s Diane Smith can do it on her own.
Let’s see if they start drilling of the coast of Ca. and Fla. If senator Scott is still against it it will be ok if we get a couple more senate seats.
I remember when the Alaska Pipeline project was shut down. I had people tell me it would NEVER be completed.
I said “If there is ever an oil shortage it will be completed quick time!”
They laughed.
Then came the Arab oil embargo and the pipeline was finished.
Same for Keystone. I believe it was shut down so some of Biden’s railroad cronies could make a killing in shipping oil. The KCS-Canadian Pacific line which runs by my house suddenly began to haul oil in brand new oil tanker cars. Hundreds of tank cars.
Just build the damned pipeline already. Sheesh 10+ years on and we’re still obsessing over it. In WWII we were building a Liberty ship ever 4 days.
Build it. Screw Warren Buffet
We were building destroyers every 17 days. Faster than Japan could sink them and faster than the Navy could crew them. And as time went on, we kept improving the destroyers.
As for the Liberty ships, they actually built a ship in ONE DAY!
Confiscate his assets.
The contractor opted out...so we’re back to page one...except for the engineering...which would/should remain the same.
