In my earlier working years I was involved in mortgage fraud cases (working with a US Attorney as a technical advisor).
This is nasty stuff—and if the Feds want to push the issue they can make the defendants life miserable in a hurry.
Most cases are settled out of court and do not go to trial.
In one case I was involved with the defendant lost their professional license (lifetime ban) and had to pay hefty fines to the government.
