What makes this US shutdown different (and more difficult)

Summary

  1. For Democrats, it's about Trump - not just healthcare
  2. For Republicans, it's an opportunity
  3. There's little trust on either side
  4. The US economy is fragile

Shutdowns are a repeat feature of US politics - but this one feels particularly bitter due to political dynamics and bad blood between the two parties.

Some government services are temporarily suspended, and about 750,000 people are expected to be put on unpaid leave as Republicans and Democrats can't agree a way forward on a spending bill.

Votes aimed at ending the impasse have repeatedly failed, and it is hard to see an off-ramp this time because both parties - as well as President Donald Trump - can see some merit in digging in.

These are the four ways in which things feel different in 2025.

1. For Democrats, it's about Trump - not just healthcare The Democratic base has been demanding for months that their party more forcefully fights the Trump administration. Well now the party leadership has a chance to show they have listened. In March, Senate leader Chuck Schumer was fiercely criticised for helping pass a Republican spending bill and averting a shutdown early this year. This time he's digging in.

This is a chance for Democrats to show they can take back some control from an administration that has moved aggressively on its agenda.

Refusing to back the Republican spending plan comes with political risk that the wider public will grow frustrated as the dispute drags on and consequences begin to mount.

The Democrats are using the shutdown fight to put a spotlight on expiring health insurance subsidies and Republican-approved government healthcare cuts for the poor, which are both unpopular.

They are also trying to curtail President Donald Trump's use of his executive powers to rescind or withhold money approved by Congress, which...

Meanwhile, the rest of us are just waiting for congress to actually pass a budget with directives versus just swiping the card to see if it is approved, again...

Were it left to me, the entire Democrat
party would be soap. I’d wash my pig with it.

Right - the solution to this is to just forget the CRs the Dems will not pass and get the budget put together for the current fiscal year, then just pass it twice, three times, whatever, to stop the Dems being able to do this again. That does not require 60 votes.

The Democrats are probably doing this because they like the sense of “chaos” it gives the perception of - even if they are blamed in polling, they believe it can make people think President Trump / Republicans are ultimately responsible because it is a feeling of chaos occurring on “their watch.” Just create a sense of “feeling bad” in general about how things are going in the country.

There's little trust on either side

There is NO trust. Trust has nothing to do with it!

750,000 people
3/4 of a million non-essential federal workers getting pink slips is a good start.

They should all be pushing for a balanced budget. Cut spending. Then cut it more. Get rid of unnecessary departments. End foreign aid. End any and all forms of welfare to illegals. Limit welfare to Americans so that it doesn’t become a perpetual, lucrative form of income.

Cut, Cut, Cut.

I would not mishandle bacon that way. Send that DNC soap out to space and then detonate it to be sure.
