Democrats shouldn’t bail out Trump as the government shutdown drags on
MSNBC.com ^ | October 5, 2025 5:00 AM CDT | Nicholas Grossman

The best time for the opposition to take a stand, rather than settle for untrustworthy promises, is right now.

This isn’t a normal government shutdown, and past shutdowns shouldn’t be treated as models for how Democrats respond to their current crisis.

Trump lashing out over the shutdown is an opportunity for Democrats to get more Americans to confront the country’s slide into authoritarianism.

Refusing to help the Republican majority pass a budget and end the current shutdown is about more than energizing the Democratic base. Shutdowns inevitably harm federal workers and the millions of Americans who rely on their services, but the Trump administration is illegally removing federal employees and dismantling government programs already, part of its broader attack on constitutional checks and balances.

Painful as it may be, Democrats should refuse to play ball with the Trump administration.

Unfortunately, making things better for the American people coming out of this shutdown is probably not an option. Either Trump makes things worse with Democratic affirmation, or Trump makes things worse despite Democratic opposition. But in these unusual circumstances, things getting worse — and faster — could actually help pull America back from the brink of dictatorship.

Painful as it may be, Democrats should refuse to play ball with the Trump administration. This White House cannot credibly commit to following the law, and rather than enter budget negotiations in good faith, it threatens even more lawbreaking to force Democratic acquiescence. No matter what beneficial government programs a deal with Trump preserves on paper, making any deal with him signals acceptance of a situation Democrats should treat as untenable.

The United States government is not currently operating under the Constitution. The executive branch has usurped congressional authority, ignores numerous court orders and violates rights — transforming the country...

It's the Schumer Shutdown. The Democrats are the ones who need bailing out.

PRESIDENT TRUMP doesn’t GAS about whether the RATS “bail him out or not.” The people getting hurt by the shutdown are the American people. They’re the ones who need to be “bailed out” and they don’t want the illegal aliens getting everything, especially health care paid for by the American taxpayers.

Democrats can’t “bail out” Trump.
Trump is a billionaire who hasn’t taken even a penny in salary since he assumed power.
What needs yo be done is change the law so congress people don’t get paid during shutdowns.

All the republican congress will need to do is pass carve outs for the military, ATC, and other truly necessary parts of the government to get paid. The government can then stay shut almost indefinitely. That’s if The GOP can be counted on, a big “if”.

“”””Shutdowns inevitably harm federal workers and the millions of Americans who rely on their services,””””

Yep, Federal Workers and those feeding at the government trough are the DEMOCRAT BASE.

So let’s make this shutdown really hurt the Democrat Base by no retroactive pay for the workers and no retroactive payments to the pigs feeding at the govt trough.

If at least a few Democrats do not see reason, and the “shutdown” continues, then Trump has wider and wiser berth to set forth his OWN program for limitation of government, which apparently includes shutting down many more “non-essential” government services and diverting the funds to the more “essential” functions. That a goodly number of contractors and civil service employees are also simultaneously terminated in the process, is just a bonus, and a further extension of DOGE.

Just a mean, lean, austerity machine. Got MY admiration.

That’s the spirit!!! I hope the Democrats keep doubling down on your totally losing position. Trump is getting exactly what he wants for his most important issue. He’s been saying it for a year and so have I. Anybody here know what it is?

Our government produces and manufactures nothing. By my calculations, they need at least a 40 percent haircut, for starters.

Destroying the deep state, the permanent bureaucracy? Explain why paying only vital parts of the government is the democrat position?

Forcing leftists to compromise is "lawbreaking" now. So, all of the laws are only to facilitate more evil by these people, right?
