North Carolina Senate Republicans approved a measure Monday in honor of Iryana Zarutska, the Ukranian refugee stabbed to death on a Charlotte light rail last month, that would revive the death penalty.
House Bill 307 is called Iryana’s Law.
Republicans say it makes several changes to remove roadblocks that have prevented the death penalty from being carried out in North Carolina.
Under the proposal, instead of letting death penalty appeals sit indefinitely, they must now be heard within two years of filing, and continuances will not be granted unless the judge finds extenuating circumstances.
The bill would establish lethal injection as the default method of execution in the state, with the Department of Adult Correction ordered to adopt alternative methods.
Senate Democrats expressed their outrage, saying, " Republicans hijacked a bipartisan crime bill by ambushing the chamber with an extreme amendment to bring back the death penalty by firing squad, exploiting the tragic death of a young woman in Charlotte to justify their reckless stunt. In protest, the majority of Senate Democrats walked out of the chamber, refusing to participate in this sham process."

That is a good start.
We need that law here in California. There are men on Death Row that have been there for 43 years (not a typo) and are not close to an execution date. A major scandal.
Lethal injection with a rusty knife to his abdomen with a twist would be too lenient for this sentencing.
Good luck with that.
Of course the Dims are mad about it. Criminals are half of their voting base. At least.
An I.V. of gasoline would work.
...especially after it’s ignited.
Any Attorney worth their billable hours should be able to have an appeal ready within 2 weeks unless they’re milking the system for taxpayer dollars.
As a Democrat I’m outraged!!! Don’t those Nazi GOPers know the death penalty is only for unborn baby humans, not for murderers and terrorists... our main constituency!
“Reckless stunt”, said the Democrats.
The only reason Demonrats get elected in NC is because of all the Yankee transplants. I spent Summers down there as a kid and teenager at my grandparents house in Spindale, NC. They didn’t have A/C.

In 2016 the voters in CA passed Proposition 66, retaining the death penalty and expediting it. On taking office in 2019, Newsom signed an executive order putting a moratorium on the death penalty. Our masters love the will of the people when they agree with it. Otherwise they blow it off
Why can’t we get back to hanging? It’s clean reusable energy.
Firing squad is cheap, easy, uses readily available materials, and is hard to appeal on grounds of cruel and unusual. The rifles and ammunition are common, and the shooters are just licensed LEOs. The condemned wears a blood absorbent vest, to reduce any gore or mess.
Just 2 milligrams of fentanyl, equal to 10 to 15 grains of table salt, is considered a lethal dose.
Give them a 50 grain dose.
the majority of Senate Democrats walked out of the chamber,
Yeah...just pout, you shameless ash oles. Disgusting.
So yay! Hopefully it will survive the expected veto from Stein.
Somehow people in NC rarely see the horrible positions of the Democrats. There just something about the letter “D.”
The Republicans don’t have the balls, but a VERY EFFECTIVE ad would be some screen shorts of Iryana on that ‘Light Rail’ and her killer, explaining what happened, including his history, and what he said after killing her (since they took our Charlie Kirk to get her out of the news), and then flat-out stating that the Democrats DEMAND that her killer NOT get the death penalty.
Maybe even do what the Democrats do...run Third Party ads saying the above, and demanding that people call their Democrat Representative to demand that he support this bill.
