A once-crumbling factory in Seneca Falls just won one of New York’s top preservation honors — after being saved from the wrecking ball and transformed into a home for dozens of families and veterans.
Huntington Apartments has received a 2025 Excellence in Historic Preservation Award from the Preservation League of New York State, the organization announced Monday.
The building at 201 Fall Street was originally home to the National Yeast Company in the late 1800s. By the 2010s, it was deteriorating fast. A gas station proposal nearly sealed its fate — until local advocates stepped in.
The Seneca Falls Historical Society and the Landmark Society of Western New York worked to put it on the 2018 “Five to Revive” list, calling attention to the building’s value and potential. That push helped bring in developer Home Leasing, which proposed a bold plan: preserve the structure and turn it into affordable housing.
“We are deeply honored,” said Home Leasing CEO Megan Houppert. “This remarkable transformation was made possible through the dedication of so many who helped preserve this landmark and believed in our vision.”
The final result is more than just a renovation. Huntington Apartments now offers 53 affordable apartments — including 27 units for homeless veterans, supported through a partnership with Eagle Star Housing.
Veterans living at the complex have on-site access to services and support. Rent includes all utilities. There’s also a community room, fitness center, playground, bike storage, and 24/7 emergency management.
The building honors Seneca Falls’ designation as a Purple Heart Town, sitting just steps from the Purple Heart Trail and Veterans Memorial Bridge.

Previously was the “National Yeast Company”
You have to wonder why they are having trouble getting women tenants, though.
Seneca Falls ... where the first Women’s Rights Convention was held in 1848. The town is home to the Women’s Rights National Historical Park and the National Women’s Hall of Fame. Elizabeth Cady Stanton. A kinda creepy place.
In this case, “homeless vets” means washed out druggies who failed basic.
Ahhh Seneca Falls. My father worked at Goulds Pumps. That factory is still there, now ITT I believe. I don’t remember the yeast factory. Beautiful part of the state.
George Bailey would be pleased
They could get rid of that Woman’s Right’s National Historic Park and Museum, and turn it into veteran’s housing too. And I’m a woman.
I get it.
I used to make parts for Goulds Pumps.
Goukds are absolutely the finest and most durable submersible pumps
It will become a crime hot spot within 12 months.
This is upstate NY. That’s pricey. We were just looking at houses around Cortland where my wife is from, maybe 90 minutes from Seneca Falls, they’re almost all under $200k.
If you put the address in google maps you can see the before look on street view.
They are supposed to be so-called “green” apartments. Which means tenants will soon be complaining about “black mold” due to lack of ventilation and over insulation.
I ran into this last year when I had a vacancy and one of the applicants who was a complete screwball (leftist single mom with two kids) came from brand new built “green” affordable housing and was moving due to “black mold.”
And I used a case study in a marketing class many years ago-it was Gould’s Pumps!
Pruitt-Igoe won awards too.
I had distant relatives who worked there.
yep. The Japanese designer was noted to say: “I didn’t realize how people could be so destructive.”
