The star's anti-knife crime advocacy led to him being considered as a candidate
Idris Elba has shut down rumours that he is entering politics, saying he doesn’t have the “courage” for the profession.
In February, Elba made the documentary Our Knife Crime Crisis, and has been vocal on ways to combat the problem. His advocacy led to a report in March that said the Labour Party was interested in him as a candidate for the Mayor Of London.
Metro has now reported that Elba spoke about the rumours while promoting his new film, A House Of Dynamite, in which he plays the US President.
“I think you have to give it to people that enter politics,” he said at a Venice press event for the movie. “The life cycle and going on an educative curve to become a politician means that you have to adopt that courage really early because then you’re faced with these impossible predicaments.”
He added: “It’s about your judgement then; it’s about what you know, what you’ve learned, what you’ve lived through, and your courage. So I learned I don’t have the courage to be in politics, that’s for sure!”
Elba’s path from acting to politics would not be unprecedented, as film stars have taken office in the past. In the US, Arnold Schwarzenegger served two terms as Governor of California, while the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, was a Hollywood actor for 30 years before coming to the White House. In the UK, two-time Oscar-winner Glenda Jackson was an MP from 1992-2015.
It appears, however, that the Luther star’s future remains in acting. A House Of Dynamite is in UK cinemas from October 10, while he is due to return for Disney animated sequel Zootropolis 2 on November 28.
Last year, Idris Elba spoke about his desire to star in a live action version of the game Cyberpunk 2077, remarking: “Let’s speak that into existence”.
Ping
Well, at least Idris seems to be responding to the political career ambitions rumor with clarity and decisiveness.
Certain other middle aged, actors continue to go back and forth showing interest. Most people interpret the indecision as Cold Feet.
American actor Matthew McConaughey (sp) comes to mind.
The Rock (Wrestler/Actor) has toyed with the notion of politics for a long while. He still has a thriving career making silly, but fun action movies and doesn’t need to change a thing to remain famous. He doesn’t need to risk looking foolish.
On the other handed, Trump flirted with running in 2000 and 2012, before pulling the trigger for 2016.
you go into politics and you get wrecked in the meat-grinder. I don’t blame him.
It seemed that way to me, as well. He (The Rock) was actively interested for a few months. I could tell, he would be either a RINO, like “Arnold”, or a another obedient Dem Drone applauding for people like Jasmine Crocket or The
Squad because every other Dem was also praising her.
Maybe he could not support their agenda.
The solution is rather simple. Put the perpetrator in jail for a long time regardless of color, religion, or political beliefs. The prison time should be unbearable up to the point of cruel and lunusual punishment. Make it bad up to the legal limits.
Funny story about the prison up in Peterhead in Scotland, many years ago. Inmates got out of their cells and were on the roof protesting. The head warden decided this would be a good time to test the fire suppression system. It worked. They returned to their cells as they were freezing,
Politics is Hollywood for ugly people. So if you are actually in Hollywood, why would you slum it by going into politics?
If they have running mates over there his should be the psycho chick from his cop show. They seemed to get along and she’d strike fear in Londoners’ hearts.
liked him in Luther
but you know he is just another actor with naive policies
and a chance to promote his new movie
did his agent or studio start the rumor?
One has to admire his courage in coming out publicly against knife crime. It’s a bold stance.
Idris Elba sounds like a good old British name,
I like Idris - not just because of this; some time ago he said he didn’t want to be held up/honored as a Black actor - he just wanted to be know as a good actor....
First it was ‘the gun’ and now it’s ‘the knife’.
It’s an IQ test; elba shares space as poster child for stupid.
uk deserves what’s coming, considering they’ve done nothing to stop their heinous leaders.
Spare me.
