A deadly truck crash in Florida has fueled an immigration fight. Here’s what to know

A foreign truck driver’s deadly U-turn on a Florida highway has become a national political flashpoint over immigration, trucking safety and millions of dollars in federal funding for several states.

Governors, high-ranking Trump administration officials and advocacy groups have all traded accusations in the aftermath of the crash, which killed three people in a minivan that slammed into the semitrailer.

Here’s what to know about the crash and the political fallout:

The crash that started it all

The Florida Highway Patrol says Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old from India, was driving a semitruck north of West Palm Beach on Aug. 12 when he tried to make a wide left U-turn across the highway median, which left his trailer blocking the northbound lane. The minivan behind Singh wasn’t able to avoid the truck in time, killing the driver and two passengers. Singh and a passenger in his truck were uninjured.

Video from inside the truck’s cab shows Singh making the turn and the van’s impact.

Charged with three state counts of vehicular homicide and immigration violations, Singh was denied bond on Saturday. The federal government wants him transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody after his criminal case is complete.

Diamond R. Litty, the elected public defender whose office was provisionally assigned to Singh on Saturday, said she cannot recall a case garnering more attention.

“Unfortunately, Mr. Singh has been caught in the crosshairs of politics,” Litty said.

Singh’s immigration and license status

Florida authorities say Singh entered the U.S. illegally from Mexico in 2018. However, California officials say the federal government told them he was in the country legally with a work permit when they issued him a driver’s license.

Singh first obtained a regular full-term commercial driver’s license in Washington state in July 2023, a type of license that people without legal status are...

Here's what to know:

The Biden misadministration allowed hundreds of thousands of incompetent workers across all occupations to enter this country and there was nothing anyone could, or would, do. What has happened is what what was expected to happen, as the incompetent and dangerous workers start royally screwing up, Trump can now step in the faceplant the mistakes of the Biden misadministration.

Now that the illegal immigrants are self deporting I have seen about a 90% reduction in vehicles going over 80 mph on the 35 mph road in front of my house in Central Florida. The trash thrown out in my front yard is down about 90% too.

Unfortunately, Mr Singh was in our country illegally and three people died because of him.

Actually should read that he made an illegal u-turn that blocked the whole highway, that no one is their right mind would have even considered. He killed 3 people on a busy highway doing something so stupid it defies logic.

Also CA says that were told he was legal but gave him a CDL which he could not have passed to get. He still can’t read or speak English and failed the test when FL tested him after the crash. They are as much fault as anyone.

"...However, California officials say the federal government told them he was in the country legally with a work permit when they issued him a driver’s license..."

Well. Okay then. That's where the trail ends. Good to know. "Someone asked from California", and "someone said OK from the federal government."

I would like to see that trail. Because California is just straight out lying about it I'll wager.

What is it about Mexican just throwing trash everywhere. I started cutting my neighbors yards last year (I didn’t know them and they were renters).

Both of them had mounds of trash in their yards. Empty water bottle right next to their house where no one but them could be putting it. And right next to their trash can.

I had to clean it up to cut it. When I went back 2 weeks later, both of them were full of trash. I cut around it and only picked up what I had to. I quit cutting their grass after that.

And behind that lie is someone taking bribes to issue licenses or somebody taking tests for others.

I saw the same thing around my brother’s house, about three miles from me. He lives on a lake and all of the lake houses are expensive, but across the road the houses are less expensive and recently have had some homes rented by 6-8-10-12 immigrants. The loud mexican music all night from many locations was one “benefit”. The yards full of cars with beer cans everywhere was another benefit. All of a sudden they are all gone! What happened? I like it.

FTA Florida authorities say Singh entered the U.S. illegally from Mexico in 2018.

However, California officials say the federal government told them he was
in the country legally with a work permit when they issued him a driver’s license.

Singh first obtained a regular full-term commercial driver’s license in Washington state in July 2023, a type of license that people without legal status are not eligible for, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The following year, California issued him a limited-term commercial license.

Both states issue licenses regardless of immigration status, as do 17 other states and the District of Columbia, according to the National Immigration Law Center. Supporters say that lets people work, visit doctors and travel safely.

The fact that he comes from a country where they drive on the left side of the road is even more reason to scrutinize these drivers.

The fact that Duffy even HAD to make the following statement reflects HOW BADLY things have deteriorated in the Biden term and in blue states.

Duffy says the English rules are about safety not politics, because drivers engaged in interstate commerce need to understand road signs and be able to communicate with law enforcement.

Duh!

Residents say DC is much better suddenly.

Harjinder Singh is in custody. As of late August 2025, he is being held in the St. Lucie County Jail in Florida following a fatal crash that killed three people. A judge has denied him bond, citing his status as an “unauthorized alien” and a potential flight risk.

Singh is accused of making an illegal U-turn with his semi-truck on Florida’s Turnpike on August 12, 2025, which caused a collision with a minivan that killed all three occupants. He faces multiple charges, including three counts of vehicular homicide.

After the crash, Singh reportedly fled to California, where he was arrested in Stockton on August 16. He was then extradited to Florida, with Florida Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins personally escorting him on the flight.

Singh is an Indian national who entered the U.S. illegally in 2018. He had obtained commercial driver’s licenses in both Washington and California. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a hold on him, which means he will be transferred to ICE custody for deportation proceedings once his criminal case is concluded.

They want you to think it was a simple mistake, after all, who hasn’t done a U turn, right?

When Edwin Mejia killed Sarah Root, the media kept saying he was 2-3 times over the legal drinking limit when technically, it was 6-7 times because he had been illegally drinking in a bar as a minor & the minor limit was significantly lower than an adult.

UNFORTUNATELY???

SEEMS TO ME HE GOT THERE VERY DELIBERATELY

HE ENTERED THE USA DELIBERATELY-—AND NOT LEGALLY.

HE GOT NOT ONE-—BUT 2 CDL LICENSES——NEITHER OF WHICH HE QUALIFIED FOR. DELIBERATELY.

HE CANNOT READ ENGLISH

HE CANNOT READ SIGNS

HE IS BARELY LITERATE AT ALL

HE MADE A LEFT DIRECTION U-TURN IN FRONT OF OTHER LANES OF TRAFFIC-—KILLING PEOPLE. DELIBERATELY...

HE SHOWS NO REMORSE

HE SEEMS OBLIVIOUS TO THE CHAOS HE CAUSED

NOTHING “UNFORTUNATE” ABOUT A SINGLE SECOND OF ALL OF THIS.

He had been in the US for 7 years and didn’t know enough English to understand road signs...and he is from a country where English is widely used and taught.
