Labour could "unleash a crime wave on Britain" by scrapping thousands of short sentences to ease a prison population crisis which could see jails running out of space by March. Dire forecasts from the Ministry of Justice predict the nation could run out of cells for offenders, and the latest data shows fewer than 1,000 male places are available.
It's reported the Government may need to scrap thousands of short sentences and release scores of lags early in order to head off the potential disaster in capacity. Latest MoJ figures published on August 8 show the total prison population, including both male, female and youth inmates, at 88,273. The number of places the data says are available is 89,627, leaving spare capacity at only a measly 1,354. Broken down between the categories, there were a total of 959 male cells available, just 222 for women and less than 174 youth custody places.
However, MoJ sources have said capacity could be heading to zero by March unless drastic measures are taken by Labour to ease the crisis. Populations in prisons may also be bolstered this summer by an influx of supporters of the banned terror group, Palestine Action, and from those taking part in demonstrations around migrant hotels.
The Telegraph reports unsavoury options open to ministers could include scrapping sentences for thousands of shoplifters, drug dealers and violent offenders.
Last summer Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood was forced to free prisoners under a new early release scheme which saw lags let out having served just 40 percent of their sentence.
An MoJ spokesman told the Telegraph: “This Government inherited a prison system days away from collapse. That is why we are building 14,000 more prison places, with 2,500 already delivered, but we know we can’t build our way out of this crisis.

These will be the LAST people they release. They need to release the REAL criminals so that they can punish the uppity people.
Crimes like rape and murder have gone up 7X since 2000.
