Some East Bay community leaders oppose the possible deployment of the National Guard in Oakland, as they say they're concerned that a military presence on city streets could bring problems.
A group called Black Men United held an event on Thursday night which they described as being part of a movement to improve safety and make lasting changes. The East Bay chapter of Live Free, a national nonprofit, put on this gathering.

How about Black Men United clean up their own streets? Start by not making babies with women you are not married to and supporting the ones you have already made.
Then the national guard and much of the police would not be needed.

That should significantly reduce Oakland’s convicted felon population.
When I first started working as a Correction Officer at the maximum security Auburn Prison in Auburn, NY in 1980, I was told to make the biggest, and toughest black man on the gallery, the "water man." He was the guy who kept the inmates in line on the unit. He was called the "water man," because he filled all the individual buckets with hot water, that were left outside each cell every day by the inmates on the gallery. The last thing convicts wanted was the "police" come snooping around, and if there was a young punk who was drawing attention to the gallery, he was taken aside by the "water man" and read the riot act. If he needed to be roughed up a little to get the message, the "water man" took care of that too...of course out of view of staff. That's what these black neighborhoods need to do themselves if they don't want the "police" to come knocking on their doors.

I don’t recall this hysteria at any time, ever, about the National Guard as though they are SS rolling in with tanks to destroy people.

Yeah, but where has this group been until now? When mention is made of deploying the national guard, suddenly this group pops up out of nowhere and says, “No need, we’ve got this.” Appears to me the criminals want to “police” themselves.
I pray the NG shows up to provide a new reality for Oakland. However, if the NG does not show up, could it be because the decision has been made to just let it collapse entirely in Oakland?

To be fair, I saw the 1969 movie Medium Cool for the first time last week. Depressing to me as Seven, Carlito’s Way, 15 Minutes and the Mist. Theme of life being hopeless. And the news media useless.
In Medium Cool the nice, sweet mother of a little boy goes out looking for him in Chicago in 1968 as the demonstrations and then violent riots against the Democrat National Convention are happening. Cops tell her to forget about her report her son has wandered off or been abducted because “Our city has been invaded. I can’t spare even one officer for your case.”
She wanders around and while not part of any protest is told to “get down to the ground” with the radicals, which she does. And in another place “You will all be subject to arrest if you do not clear out now.” And she can’t really.
I think some incidents like that are going to happen in the justifiable ICE raids soon. Can’t be helped.

I didn’t recognize the young Robert Forster was the middle aged one years later in Jackie Brown with Pam Grier from the Elmore Leonard novel.
