California’s signature climate effort is up for renewal — and it’s a fight

As California pushes toward its ambitious goals for addressing climate change, the fate of its signature program is hanging in the balance. For months, lawmakers, industry groups and environmental advocates have been mired in negotiations over whether and how to extend the cap-and-trade program, which limits planet-warming emissions, beyond its 2030 expiration date.

The cap-and-trade program was nation-leading when it was authorized by state law in 2006. It requires major polluters such as power plants, oil refineries and other industrial facilities to purchase allowances, or credits, for each ton of carbon dioxide they emit, and lets those companies buy or sell their unused allowances at quarterly auctions. Each year fewer credits are created, lowering the total annual climate pollution in the state.

Gov. Gavin Newsom is advocating for the program to be extended to 2045, and hopes to see it reauthorized before the end of the legislative session on September 12. Cap-and-trade currently covers about two-thirds of California’s greenhouse gas emissions, and its auctions generate billions of dollars for the state each year.

Most experts agree the program must continue in order for California to reach its goal of carbon neutrality by 2045. But while Newsom is pushing for it to be reauthorized largely in its current form, critics say considerable reforms are needed to address concerns about how cap-and-trade is run and where the money is spent. The California Air Resources Board, which administers the program, is involved in a halting rulemaking process to evaluate changes, including how the program is structured.

Cap and trade is always based on fictional math to “calculate” the effects of a fictional problem and how much money should be taken from producers and given to leeches.

And there is a middle man who gets the transaction fees both ways plus any little extra he can make on manipulation, speculation and market distortions.

Anthropogenic climate change, specifically through burning fossil fuels, is the most egregious hoax in the history of mankind. It’s not only been pushed to further totalitarian regimes, but has attracted resources that could have been used to mitigate the real threats to humanity, like microplastics and waste disposal. While the useful idiots ride bikes and drive electric cars thinking they’re making a difference, the garbage we’re discarding will destroy our environment, beginning with potable water. Only causes that attract money and power receive serious attention.

Just keeping up the fare, hoax and pretense to assure continued drain on resources through taxation and overregulation.

California has gone from from blessed to tormented in little more than a generation. Hard to believe there is not an ongoing revolution and strife 24/7/365.

Oh, wait, that pretty much describes the current situation.

The California Air Resources Board

Just as a reminder, this unelected board now makes the rules for not only California, but for at least a dozen states who have surrendered their sovereignty to it.

“California’s signature climate program, cap-and-trade, is set to expire in 2030. Gov. Gavin Newsom wants to extend the program to 2045, but critics say it needs reforms.”

Gov. Newsom won’t be around in 2030 ... but maybe Emperor Newsom will be.

The politicians proposing, backing or supporting any of the “green” scams are the political equivalent of criminals. We have no laws that makes it a crime to lie to the public about the affect of a policy a politician gets behind. There should be. A good Congressional hearing in the current Congress can demonstrate, with science, the scams of the “green” policies, and with the right laws remove the representatives that lied about them.

“money should be taken from producers and given to leeches.”

That is, to Democrat donors.

It’s a massive income redistribution program to people who contribute zero or negative productivity to the economy.
