On August 3, 2025, just after 10:00 PM, Tampa Police arrested two drivers who were racing westbound on the Selmon Expressway, with no regard for the safety of themselves or other drivers.
At around 10:06 p.m., as a Tampa Police Officer was entering the expressway from Willow St., two vehicles, a 2021 Honda Accord and a 2019 Dodge Challenger, passed the officer’s vehicle at speeds exceeding 100 MPH, in a 55 MPH zone.
As the officer followed, both drivers continued to engage in reckless speeding and cut through vehicles without regard for others on the roadway.
The officer was able to safely initiate a traffic stop on both vehicles, which led to the prompt arrest of 19-year-old Angel Cortez Hurrea (W/M, 8/18/2005), who was driving the Honda Accord, and 21-year-old Devin Harrison (B/M, 9/16/2003), who was driving the Dodge Challenger.
“Let this be a warning to those who have a blatant disregard for the safety of others by speeding on roadways. You will be held accountable and your vehicle will be impounded,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “No matter the time of night, everyone in Tampa has the right to feel safe on our roads. I’m incredibly proud of the officers whose actions helped ensure that safety.”
At the time of the arrest, it is believed that both suspects were intentionally recording the race to upload the video on social media.
Both vehicles were impounded, and each driver was charged with One Misdemeanor Count of Unlawful Racing on a Highway and One Misdemeanor Count of Dangerous Excessive Speeding.

Kind of a Drag!
It’s this kind of stuff that caused me to move out of Tampa three years ago to the most remote, rural Tennessee town I could find. It was a big step up.
I used to drive fast also....too many tickets...now people honk at me cause I am not driving fast enough.
On some roads the average speed seems to be 85 mph...pickup trucks, bikes, SUV’s....cuhrazee...not going there anymore...
Pretty dumb - but at least they both had the sense to stop once the law was on their tail.
A couple of guys who decided to race in our area a few years ago ended up hitting another car, killing one of its occupants. The victim was the pitcher from the localhigh school team. He and his dad were driving home from dinner with Grandma when they got hit. I do think the racers were convicted.

No wonder the crime “Statistics” are skewed and can be misleading - when doctored by a willing democrat party liner press corpse.
Illegal alien? Or “White Male” = racist, redneck, MAGA-Hat-wearing, ignorant Trump voter “Florida Man” ?
My home of Orlando has the same street racing problem, along with other issues. My escape destination of choice is small town North Carolina.
Woops, not fast but furious.

Stupid idiots. If you want to race, go to the private track just east of downtown Tampa. Don’t use the Solomon or the Campbell to race.
Notice that the hispanic gentleman is a “W/M.”
There’s a lot of that in Atlanta too.
He was in McNairy, and a lawyer friend who lives nearby recently told me it's still quite lawless. The good news is that the bad guys probably run delivery services these days.
