President Trump says he will fire BLS commissioner after July jobs report disappoints

President Trump said in a social media post Friday afternoon that he directed members of his administration to fire Erika McEntarfer, commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, after the BLS on Friday published a July jobs report that contained what it called "larger than normal" revisions to data from May and June.

The July jobs report published Friday morning showed the US economy added 73,000 jobs last month, fewer than expected, while the unemployment rate rose to 4.2%.

The most notable numbers to emerge from the report, however, were downward revisions to job gains in May and June, which saw 258,000 jobs taken away from what had been initially reported.

May's job gains were revised down to 19,000 from 144,000, while June's additions were cut to just 14,000 from the 147,000 initially reported.

In its release on Friday, the BLS said these revisions "result from additional reports received from businesses and government agencies since the last published estimates and from the recalculation of seasonal factors."

Economists on Friday were near-unanimous in their view that July's jobs data and the revisions to May and June reflect a labor market that is far weaker than had been suggested by recent data and characterizations by some officials, notably Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

"The 'solid' state of the labor market described by the FOMC earlier this week looks more questionable after the July employment report," Wells Fargo senior economist Sarah House wrote Friday.

Job gains over the last three months have now averaged just 35,000 after Friday's revisions.

In his post on Friday, Trump accused McEntarfer and the BLS of reporting "faked" jobs numbers in the run-up to last year's election, and noted February's benchmark revision to 2024 jobs data that showed payroll growth last year was overstated by some 818,000 jobs.

The BLS jobs numbers were clearly manipulated during the Biden years. OTOH today's weak number has some corroboration in the weak manufacturing PMI number.

This sends a very strong message to the next BLS commissioner that they better not report poor job numbers

This certainly wasn't reported in this story:

President Trump was just informed that the jobs numbers are being produced by a LEFT-OVER BIDEN OFFICIAL, "who faked the Jobs Numbers before the Election to try and boost Kamala’s chances of Victory." He just FIRED HER, Dr. Erika McEntarfer.

He’s looking at this all wrong. This is the ammunition needed to really put the pressure on Powell to now cut interest rates.

“””while the unemployment rate rose to 4.2%.”””

BLS is probably counting the illegals incarcerated at Alligator Alcatraz as unemployed.

The woman he fired was a Biden appointee.

Can’t speak for anyone else, but I don’t think what I’m suggesting is stupid at all. If he wants lower interest rates he should use this information to his advantage as opposed to casting doubt on it. If you think my logic is flawed there, tell me how…

I think this sends a very strong message to the next BLS commissioner that they better not do democrat bidding and lie any more about job numbers...

I think what Trump wants is truth and transparency so that the proper course of action can be taken to result what is in the best interests of America.

One would not want their doctor to give the wrong diagnosis and treatment resulting from inaccurate data and readings, whether that data was good or bad. The right diagnosis and treatment can only be arrived at if the data is accurate.

It’s the same with our economy. Trump doesn’t want overly optimistic measuring either because that would result in the wrong measures being taken.

Exactly. It's all part of the same old song and dance that the dishonest Left has been doing for decades. They control "permanent DC" and the media. They use them to prop up their elected officials, and destroy those they don't like.

Trump's attitude of seeking out and firing these political hacks among the bureaucracy is exactly the right one.

To believe the revisions and the job numbers reported, you would have to believe that employment dropped off the face of the earth over the past 3 months

I agree. The person that had that job could be a “deep state” mole who was doing her best to take down Trump. OMHO the deep state is doing all it can to get back at Trump. He needs to get his own people in there.
