BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — The United States and Argentina on Monday announced that they are working on a plan to allow Argentine tourists to again travel to the U.S. without a visa.
It will likely take two to three years before visa-free travel becomes a reality for Argentine passport holders, but the Trump administration's move to kickstart the process marked a show of support for President Javier Milei, its staunchest ally in South America and a darling of conservatives around the world.
The gesture coincided with a visit by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to Buenos Aires, the Argentine capital, for closed-door meetings with Milei and his officials. Noem signed the statement of intent alongside Security Minister Patricia Bullrich in Milei's office.
Noem, on horseback at the country's sprawling Campo De Mayo army base and donning a cowboy hat and jeans, told reporters that the Trump administration would put Argentina on an “expedited path” to enrollment in the Visa Waiver Program.
Still, she cautioned that securing approval within the next year “would be very difficult," according to a White House pool report.
The Department of Homeland Security praised Milei for reshaping Argentina's foreign policy in line with the U.S.
“Under President Javier Milei’s leadership, Argentina is becoming an even stronger friend to the United States — more committed than ever to border security for both of our nations,” the statement said.
This first step toward waiving visa requirements for Argentines, it added, “highlights our strong partnership with Argentina and our mutual desire to promote lawful travel while deterring threats."
The department cited Argentina as having the lowest visa overstay rate in the U.S. of any Latin American country.

...a plan to allow Argentine tourists to AGAIN travel to the U.S. without a visa.
I did not know there was a time when Argentines could travel to the U.S. with out a visa. When I worked in South America in 1977-1978, I don't recall having to get visas to work in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, or Ecuador.
President Javier Milei...a darling of conservatives around the world
What a smarmy back-handed slap. His performance is at least as astounding as President Trump's. There is NO good news the MSM will not punish with sleaze.
1996-2002.

That’s RIGHT! I voted for this!!! 🤠
On a side note... does Kristi Noem give good photo-op or whar??!? 😂
“a darling of conservatives” how often does AP report about liberal darlings and left wing allies?
US News is 100% propaganda. They aren’t even trying to hide it any longer.
Bad move. There are plenty of leftist/Peronists in Argentina that shouldn’t be allowed here.
“Right wing....”. They forgot ‘violent, extremist, racis....’
They act in good faith, they should be prioritized.
“Bad move. There are plenty of leftist/Peronists in Argentina that shouldn’t be allowed here.”
I’m inclined to agree. Given the state of the world, the rise of islamists, the general anti-American attitude, I don’t know why we wouldn’t require every visitor to the USA to get a visa in advance.
It is what you expect from the sniveling little rats at AP/MSN

And it’s not a costume like so many politicians have to wear. She is a farm and ranch girl from South Dakota and knows what she is doing on a horse.
I see you worked in South America during Pinochet’s Operation Condor. Was it as bad as it sounds? I think Argentina had the most killed.
In Chile (Santiago, Concepcion, Valparaiso), I saw no signs of the big anti-leftist campaign. In fact, the country was very peaceful and friendly when I was there.
In Buenos Aires, there were heavily armed troops at the airport, but I saw no problems other than that.
One of my Chilean co-workers pointed out bullet holes in the presidential palace from the 1973 Chilean coup d'état that got rid of the socialist president Salvador Allende. I did not meet anybody who was unhappy to be rid of him.
Given the reported magnitude of Operation Condor, both countries seemed prosperous and peaceful.
I was 25-26 years old at the time and had little awareness of what was going on in South America. The funny thing is, I worked in China October 1976 to April 1977 -- I arrived there just two weeks after Mao had died and the "Gang of Four" unrest was in full force! We had a couple days at the fertilizer plant in a remote part of Yunnan Province where all the workers didn't show up to work. There all went to political rallies waving their Little Red Books, banging pots and pans, and shouting / chanting for long periods. It was a bit unnerving seeing that.
My folks must have been scared to death with the hot spots I was visiting, but they never said a thing to me about it!
George Bush told Koch there was a hit put out on him by operatives connected to Operation Condor. Koch didnt get told until there was a car bomb on Embassy Row. Ostensibly, because CIA didnt think Operation Condor could reach the US.
No one would help Koch.
It must have been a tough time for him.
You made it safe and sound through turbulent times but your parents were probably worried.
“your parents were probably worried.”
I’ve got no doubt they worried all the time when I worked overseas, about 18 months total time. I was in a lot of hotspots (according to the news magazines), but it never really felt that way.
Of course, I was a bit unnerved when the Chinese took the passports of all foreign workers away for “safe keeping.” And again when the Red Guard (mid-teens kids with rifles) detained me and my interpreter at a bridge guard shack after we walked under the bridge. They thought this running dog capitalist was a spy checkout out their bridge structure.
The difference between Noem and that evil America hating rat bastard Mayorkas is like night and day. Team Trump 2.0 is altogether worthy of our President. I’m thankful for them and proud of them too!
“”””that evil America hating rat bastard Mayorkas “
It is not often you see someone that can stand there and lie constantly like Mayorkas.
