Thune Warns Dems Are Setting ‘Dangerous And Ugly Precedent’ With Trump’s Nominees
The Daily Wire ^ | July 28, 2025 | Daniel Chaitin

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) fired a warning shot at Democrats amid calls for the upper chamber to cancel its August recess and confirm more of President Donald Trump’s nominees.

In remarks on the Senate floor, Thune explained how the Senate has confirmed 107 civilian nominees over the past six months — nearly doubling the pace seen during Trump’s first term. This is happening in spite of Democrats impeding the process by forcing procedural votes in which many of them end up supporting the nominees in significant numbers, he added.

Thune described what he called a “historic level of obstruction” being waged by the minority party, noting how Trump is the only president on record not to have a single civilian nominee confirmed by voice vote or unanimous consent at this point in his term. By comparison, the leader pointed out, former President Joe Biden had 44 civilian nominees confirmed by voice vote at this point in his first and only term.

“Democrats haven’t offered a shred of courtesy to President Trump, to the voters who elected him, or the people who have stepped up to serve our country in his administration,” Thune said. Yet ultimately, “the ball is in [the] Democrats’ court,” he asserted.

“They can continue to drag out the process on even the most uncontroversial nominees, and we can spend a lot more hours with each other in the Senate chamber,” Thune said. “Or they can rein in their reflexive anti-Trump sentiment and allow some of his rank-and-file nominees to proceed by unanimous consent or voice vote — just as Republicans did when the roles were reversed. And I’d remind my colleagues about the dangerous and ugly precedent that they’re setting here. But the choice is theirs … whether it’s the slow way or the fast way, we’re getting President Trump’s nominees confirmed.

Earlier this month, after Congress passed the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” and a $9 billion rescissions package, Trump urged Thune to keep the Senate busy cementing his second-term priorities.

“Hopefully the very talented John Thune, fresh off our many victories over the past two weeks and, indeed, 6 months, will cancel August recess (and long weekends!), in order to get my incredible nominees confirmed,” Trump said on Truth Social. “We need them badly!!! DJT.”

Democrats oppose Trump just on principle.

Doesn’t matter what they think between that and orders from the party, they do what they’re told and try to stymie Trump0 at every turn.

If you’ve been screaming from the hilltops that Trump is “literally Hitler” since 2016 then a shred of courtesy would be a horrible thing to show. What we’re looking at is political theater. It won’t change until someone rational takes over the party and they adopt a more American focused agenda. Until then, it’s all yelling the F word and bluster. By comparison most politics from more than twenty years ago seems gracious and civil.

Actions have consequences. Think about some of the Democrat missteps over the past 20 years, missteps that turned around and bit their backsides. It’s like the Dims never heard of the Golden Rule.

Stop whining and just keep moving forward as you can, Thune. It’s not going to improve.

It would be hilarious to cancel the August recess and make these a-holes stay in DC. All because of their stupid delaying tactics.

You can’t go on vacation because you spent all your time slowing down the process.

This confirms how ineffectual Republicans are... They confirmed Biden's nominees with no objection. They should've stonewalled every one of them.

Republicans think they’re dealing with other Americans. They’re not. They’re dealing with people who want to overthrow our system of gov’t. The Stupid Party just never seems to buy a clue.

Couldn’t agree more. Keep the Senate in session so there’s plenty of time for them to play their games.

Their strategy is absolutely no cooperation. Ever. It makes them feel courageous. At the same time they can’t figure out why they’re bombing with the public. Offering even a minimal level of cooperation while criticizing and opposing on truly important things, as the GOP is all to eager to do when the tables are turned, could be an effective strategy. Yet decades of media tongue baths have made them intellectually lazy; their minds are simply not supple enough to adopt such a strategy

John Thune is weak. If he was playing hardball, the Democrats would have knocked it off. But they know that he's weak so they're stalling.

Why not?

Yes. The dems are being baited into recess appointments and their TDS will make it happen.

Thule could call for a full recess vote and every deMS-13 will vote for it.

Yes. Better idea. If it means stopping Trump nominees, the Dems won’t care if they are still in session.
