People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals filed a state lawsuit Tuesday in New York against the American Kennel Club in hope of forcing the influential group to ditch breeding standards that PETA alleged lead to "deformed, unhealthy" canines.
PETA specifically targeted some of the most popular breeds of man's best friend — bulldogs, French bulldogs, pugs, dachshunds and the Chinese shar-pei.
Plaintiffs asked Manhattan Supreme Court to stop the AKC from backing these standards that alleged "cause deformities, great suffering and premature death" to these animals.
The AKC said that it did not "create breed standards" and that it instead works to ensure the classifications "are clear, consistent, and continue to reflect the breed’s health, function, and type."
"The AKC has been — and remains — firmly committed to the health, well-being, and proper treatment of all dogs," it said in a statement.
"We categorically reject PETA’s mischaracterizations of specific breed standards and their assertion that these standards create unhealthy dogs."
The targeted breeds include unique features such as short, upturned or flat noses seen on the faces of bulldogs, French bulldogs and pugs.
The short-legged elongated bodies of dachshunds and unique skin folds of the Chinese shar-pei may bring smiles and approving nods in homes, dog walk parks, animal shelters and pet stores across America, but PETA advocates claim the human smiles come at a terrible cost to the dogs.

Sue PETA to stop them from breeding.👍😏
Yes. Or at least spay and neuter these mutants.
Can we do this for democrats?
Heh.
Just sayin, but pugs are fugly AND they really do have breathing issues.
Flame away ;-)
THEY LOOKED THE SAME 60 years ago.
Hold a BBQ outside their HQ.
It's all a matter of personal opinion.
What about DemonRATS pumpin’ out kids with mental issues. Shouldn’t we demand that they end their “deformed” breeding?
When I was in grade school, I had a wonderful little Dachshund named Trudi. She died far too young. Perhaps from standards simillar to those PETA objects to.
Does that make PETA right? Not really. Breeders need to be very careful with their animals.
The only deformed breeding PETA needs to look into is within its own membership...
I’m definitely not a PETA supporter, but what has been done to German Shepherd standards is almost criminal.
I can’t stand PETA and think most of their activity is ridiculous, but in this case, they have a point. We’ve had a pug and been around French bulldogs quite a bit. They do have respiratory problems, and our pug had corneal abrasions several times, just from the wrinkles under his eyes brushing against them. Over time, they have been bred to be “more” that way (very short muzzled and buggy eyed) because people like it, but it’s not good for the animals. The AKC could promote a different standard for these breeds. Not speaking to the other breeds mentioned as I have no experience with them.
They need to grab headlines to keep the fund raising going with their cat-lady base.
If Peta was truly against “deformed breeding” they’d stop having kids and would be against the trans agenda...
Just sayin.
My family has never owned any of the breeds mentioned in the article, but I take your point. My point is that PETA never stops.
I wonder what percentage of peta members who agree with breeding restrictions offer their support to trans mutilation for children ?
It’s criminal what they’ve done to German Shepherd‘s with that sloped back and deformed legs. No fan of PETA, But AKC breeders are sick in the head.
I’m not a PETA fan, either-most of the time they are in lala land with their concerns-but they do have a point here-years ago, my husband and I searched every AKC kennel in the area for a German Shepherd pup they could assure us would not be prone to hip dysplasia, arthritis and a short life to be our pet and companion. We ended up buying out of state-for a much higher price. That female shepherd lived to be nearly 13, with no problems.
The bulldogs you see out here are the bigger American Bulldogs-they do not have the wheezing, mashed faces-or the asthma and other breathing problems the Frenchies and Old English Bulldogs do-yet. The AKC really does need to quit allowing unhealthy standards just because humans think those features are cute-it is cruel..
The very old breeds of dog not on the most-wanted list are the best bet for a healthy companion dog-they haven’t changed much in a few hundred years or been bred for exaggerated breed standards that cause problems-American Bulldogs, Siberian Huskies, Malemutes, Great Pyrenees, Danes, Bullmastiffs, even Chow Chows are healthier dogs-true, they are on the bad/biting dog list, but that is mostly BS too in my opinion. My Chow and my Siberian Husky came from reputable kennels-both lived to be nearly 18, in good health.
I’ll see you your fugly pug comment and raise you a “German shepherd dogs have been bread with sloped backs” and look nothing like the ones used in WWII.
