A person was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents inside a Baltimore courthouse, prompting a criminal investigation into a Maryland corrections employee, according to the Baltimore City Sheriff's Office.

The person was detained by two ICE agents on Tuesday, June 24, inside the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. Courthouse, Baltimore City Sheriff Sam Cogen said.

Sheriff Cogen told WJZ an unidentified employee with the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services took it upon themselves to call ICE about someone scheduled to come to their office.

The sheriff believes that it falls out of line with their department duties.

"This was sort of like a shocking incident," Cogen said. "We never thought that we would have an employee of another state agency calling for immigration enforcement."

Cogen said they are investigating whether criminal charges are appropriate.

"They may have possessed confidential information that was shared that may be outside the scope of their duties," Cogen said.

At this point, it's unclear whether the employee who allegedly made the call to ICE is still working in the courthouse, or what happened to the person who was detained by ICE...

"The sheriff believes that it falls out of line with their department..."

So not doing your job, ignoring the laws and the oath you swore to when you took the job, is in line with your department?

In a FUNCTIONAL country, the person would be arrested for NOT reporting a non-English speaker (or otherwise suspicious person) to Immigration.

At this point they have find out who’s issuing the gag orders and arrest the person for OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE.

If they take action against the employee, the sheriff’s department may be charged with denial of the employees civil rights. Jail for Cogen, massive fines for Sheriffs department, and withholding of the federally augmented salaries of the departments top brass.
IMHO

"Incidentally the 5th highest tax burden state in the USA."

That doesn't surprise me.

They are going to try and make an example of the person doing his civic duty.

Cogan told 11 News he’s speaking out to send a message to Baltimore and beyond that, this action is unacceptable, possibly criminal and now under investigation.

“Any enforcement action that occurs here should go through the sheriff’s office — it didn’t,” Cogen told 11 News. “It looks like the public safety employee was way off script and sort of acting out on their own, which is why we’re looking at them and their actions to see if they’re appropriate or legal.”
