“ NY has almost no military facilities. ”

Not entirely correct as a matter of fact it has two major posts and number of smaller ones. Fort Drum (home of the 10th Mountain Division) and the United States Military Academy at West Point.

In addition New York has a huge contingent of Department of Homeland Security (ICE, Border Patrol, Coast Guard) and numerous FAA elements. The Federal government also protects 455 miles of border between New York and Canada.

I had forgotten about both, but compared to population it's not a lot, unlike NM.

CA would be a mixed bag: huge welfare population but also big military facilities and a lot of defense work.

Just trying to get at the fact that it's not just money in vs. money received.

“Then, many move to an area they never worked in, raised kids in or were part of a community for decades and get the benefit of merely retiring there. “

And after retiring in Florida they pay high property taxes supporting schools and related infrastructure they never use.

“They walk into the area getting homestead via their age. “

Not via their age. Via owning a home as their primary residence.

“Also some folks don’t realize that a state like New Jersey funds almost 100% of roadway construction and maintenance through state taxes and tolls. It receives almost no Federal funding for highways.”

Fact check:

Federal Funds

Federal revenues for FY 2024 are projected at $2.507 billion. NJDOT’s share of the federal funding is $1.600 billion, while NJ Transit’s allotment is $907 million.

Yup, it should be the other way around. Medicaid should be included, while SS should be excluded. Especially since I bet they include SS taxes as income, giving high-wage/CoL States like NY or CA or NJ a higher relative pay-in than States where a two-bedroom apartment is only $800/mo. Sewing the numbers on both sides of this ratio.

Also, why would military bases be included? That’s not specifically $$ going to the State...

Many people are asking about Medicaid spending in these states. I figured it wouldn’t change the list. But, out of curiosity, I checked into it.

Here it goes…

A 2024 report on Medicaid spending doesn’t seem to exist, yet. Maybe that’s the reason why it wasn’t included in the 2024 chart at the top?

But I found a 2023 Medicaid spending report, so I must use 2023 numbers.

The numbers on the chart below were taken from these sources:

For Medicaid, the federal government pays a percentage (that can’t be lower than 50%) to each state, and the state pays the rest. States with higher incomes receive a lower percentage; states with lower incomes receive a higher percentage.

2023 Federal Matching Percentage by State

2023 Federal and State Share of Medicaid Spending

Total Federal Taxes Collected from each state (Click on 2023.)

2023 U.S. States by Population

I picked states at the top and bottom of the list.

The numbers speak for themselves… (but, if I made an error, let me know).

RECEIVER STATES: These states received a much larger chunk of what they paid in.

New Mexico paid $12 billion in federal taxes and received $7 billion from the federal government for Medicaid.
West Virginia paid $9 billion in federal taxes and received $5 billion from the federal government for Medicaid.
Alaska paid $7 billion in federal taxes and received $2 billion from the federal government for Medicaid.
Mississippi paid $15 billion in federal taxes and received $5 billion from the federal government for Medicaid.
Alabama paid $36 billion in federal taxes and received $6 billion from the federal government for Medicaid.

DONOR STATES: The taxpayers in these states paid much more in tax revenue then their states received in return.

New Jersey paid $181 billion in federal taxes and received $15 billion from the federal government for Medicaid.
Washington paid $155 billion in federal taxes and received $20 billion from the federal government for Medicaid.
California paid $569 billion in federal taxes and received $81 billion from the federal government for Medicaid.
New York paid $374 billion in federal taxes and received $62 billion from the federal government for Medicaid.

As someone wrote in a post above, it's really all about the individual taxpayer - not the states. But, if we're comparing states, here it is...

Interesting, with the exception of NM all the “donor” states seem to have massive corporate tax bases and then shell out more $ per person than the receiver states. Speaks to economically stratified societies, except NM where everybody is poor.
