A Clay County man forced to self-deport back to India has new hopes of returning.
Action News Jax told you about Tapan Purohit in late March after his family contacted our station.
But now, his wife says a new ruling should clear the way for him to come home.
Tapan, who came to the US in 2011 on a J-1 visa, was forced to self-deport after ICE agents enforced an order of removal against him.
“It is very difficult. It’s a horrible thing to go through,” said Tapan’s Wife, Ashley Kennedy-Purohit.
At the time Tapan left, he and his wife, who is a US citizen, were waiting for a ruling from an immigration judge that would have allowed him to stay as their I-130 marriage petition was processed.
Ashley just returned from a two-week trip to visit her husband.
She told Action News Jax that soon after arriving, she got some uplifting news: The ruling they’d been holding out for had been issued in Tapan’s favor.
It was approved just a few days after he self-deported.

Good move Apu.
Yes, they definitely did him that favor.
The J-1 classification (exchange visitors) is authorized for those who intend to participate in an approved program for the purpose of teaching, instructing or lecturing, studying, observing, conducting research, consulting, demonstrating special skills, receiving training, or to receive graduate medical education or training.
The J-1 status is a NON-IMMIGRANT visa.
Some J-1 nonimmigrants enter the United States specifically to work while others do not. Employment is authorized for J-1 nonimmigrants only under the terms of the exchange program. Please check with your sponsoring agency for more information on any restrictions that may apply to you working in the United States.
See the link at the top of this post for details straight from the US Department of State.
Basically, Tapan overstated his visa by at least 10 years.
Maybe, his wifiey can also move to India?
how about charging him for all the money wasted
because he overstayed his visa?
why was the marriage approved when he was in the country illegally?
Jerry Seinfeld! Very bad man. (wagging finger) Very bad!
Why is it always fat white chicks with no lips who burn the coal?
“Maybe, his wifiey can also move to India?”
Oh no, it is a fate worse then death! (said with thick hindi accent)
Funny how we are all told they bring such “cultural enrichment” but ask them to return to the land of Enriched Culture and they positively go apes**t.
Kristi Noem has a commercial saying “self deport and you may be able to come back legally”.
My problem with this guy is he didn’t marry this woman, (after having kids with her) until they felt the walls closing in.
BTW, this is the county next to me....you should’ve heard the sob stories coming out of the local media from the beginning.....cnn would be proud. SMH
“A Clay County man”
Clay County man. Still blowing smoke.
The media frequently misuses the word “forced”. The man may have been PRESSURED to self deport. He would have been forced to deport if he had not chosen to self deport.
Exactly.
From the article: A Clay County An Indian man forced to self-deport back to India has new hopes of returning.
He was/is not a “Clay County man” if he’s not a US citizen. He’s a Indian that lives in Clay County.
“you should’ve heard the sob stories coming out of the local media from the beginning”
Music to the ears of those who want immigration laws aggressively enforced!
These visa overstayers (is that a word?) are particularly galling. We let them in to America to do something for us, for a time with the understanding that they’ll go home when they’re done. I have worked or done business in foreign countries, under various visa or permit conditions. When I’m done, I come back to America ... not going to abuse the other country’s hospitality. These creeps abuse our hospitality, spit in our faces. In some ways, they’re worse than the border-jumpers.
It looks like Indians don’t even want to live in India.
No other bugger will have them?
Because that’s not one of the conditions of license approval. Marriage is one of the least regulated licenses there is, as it should be.
