Trump's policy zig-zags are driving his base crazy

Trump's hinting at major policy shifts have led some conservative voices outside the administration to warn it to reverse course or risk fracturing the MAGA coalition.

By Ben Whedon Published: July 9, 2025 10:56pm

Though President Donald Trump enjoys strong support from most of his Republican base, he has increasingly frustrated a few stalwart supporters by floating departures from his campaign promises, prompting substantive online pressure to reverse course.

Despite a winning streak for Trump on various fronts, particularly in courts, trade, and diplomatic actions, it’s been a tough few weeks for MAGA diehards: The administration has repeatedly floated some sort of amnesty for illegal aliens in the agricultural and hospitality sectors; backed off from releasing significant information on the Jeffrey Epstein case; and renewed U.S. involvement in the Middle East and Ukraine War.

Promises made, promises kept?

All three of these developments have led major conservative voices outside the administration to warn it to reverse course or risk fracturing the MAGA coalition, with varying degrees of success. The Trump administration, for its part, was adamant that he maintains strong support in the base and vowed to follow through on key campaign pledges. “President Trump is fulfilling his promise to the American people to carry out the largest mass deportation operation in history," White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told Just the News. "There will be no amnesty. Only deportations of the violent, criminal illegal aliens that Joe Biden welcomed into the country." "The One, Big, Beautiful Bill that was just signed into law delivers on countless campaign promises the President made," she added. "As a result of the historic start of his second term, President Trump is more popular among the Republican base than any Republican was at this time in their administration. The President will never stop delivering for the American people."

Hinting at limited amnesty

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on Tuesday stated unambiguously that the Trump administration would not pursue amnesty and would continue mass deportations, following a lengthy and public back-and-forth over possible accommodations for the agricultural and hospitality industries.

"There will be no amnesty, the mass deportations continue, but in a strategic way, and we move the workforce towards automation and 100% American participation," she told reporters at a press gathering.

Rollins’s statement followed reports over the weekend that the administration was facing pressure to drop its deportation efforts at farms and hotels to prevent labor shortages and also to grant some form of amnesty to illegals working in those industries.

Giving credence to those reports was the Department of Homeland Security’s brief pause on ICE raids on farms and hotels, which prompted outrage from Trump supporters that led to a swift reversal. Trump himself also issued multiple public statements suggesting he would change policy due to complaints from American farmers.

But with passage of the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act and its additional funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to hire more agents and expand detention capacity, many conservative figures highlighted the minimal need to make concessions on the issue.

“There is no other issue the conservative base feels more passionately about than immigration,” posted TurningPoint USA’s Charlie Kirk. “In just a few decades, everyday Americans have watched their country transform into a nation of strangers. We must deliver mass deportations, not amnesty.”

“There can’t be amnesty, everyone here illegally must go home,” asserted War Room’s Steve Bannon.

Some conservative figures appeared to take Rollins’s declaration as a concession to their outrage. The Blaze host Auron MacIntyre, for instance, shared footage of Rollins’s remarks with the caption “always chimp.” The term refers to “chimping out,” a traditionally pejorative phrase with racial connotations that, in online context, instead describes the act of expressing frustration through posting.

It appears most government workers are concerned about their paychecks and perks, not the good of the country.

IIRC the Secret Service agents out of the Pittsburgh field office were not even trained in protection of high value people like Trump. Who is the person at the head of the Secret Service? Is it still an anti-Trump person?

We lost a local LEO in the flood. His RV was swept away with him and his girlfriend and his parents in it. They never had a chance.

What a shock. I'm so sorry, luvie. Yet, if you have to go, it must have been amazing to all arrive in heaven at one time. Assuming they were saved...

I listened to Charlie Kirk’s podcast about“amnesty”. I agree with him completely. Any kind of amnesty might not reopen the flood gates at the border but will certainly retain 20, 30 or 40 million illegals in the country. For too many years, we have been a country with open borders and welfare for invaders. No Country can survive with both. Too many people lied in requesting asylum and they will lie about how long they’ve been here as well.

The head of the SS is Trump’s hand-picked man who was at the head of his personal detail in Butler, Sean Curran.

“ Bondi was asked if the “list of Epstein’s clients” could be released, and she said it was on her desk.”

The word “it” is the problem. My mental response to politicians and pundits using pronouns that are confusing has been “too many pronouns“

I don’t listen to almost any leftist politicians or pundits, but too many people on the right that I truly like use far too many pronouns. My biggest problem with them has been that they leave themselves vulnerable to being quoted by the left where the left can claim any word they want as the antecedent of the pronoun.

In this case Bondi clearly was referring to “the list of Epstein’s clients”. It might be awkward to keep repeating the noun instead of using a pronoun, but politicians and their spokespeople should do it.

“ The head of the SS is Trump’s hand-picked man who was at the head of his personal detail in Butler, Sean Curran.”

I wonder if Trump trusts Sean Curran and just didn’t know anyone else to put into that position whom he could trust. Perhaps Sean Curran is an example of the Peter principal and has been promoted to his level of incompetence. Perhaps at the highest levels of the Secret Service there is just so much insider dealings that top people do not get treated with true justice. I don’t see how the top people organizing the secret Service for the Butler Trump rally are not being held accountable.

The fire is out but it spread to the house next door and into the forest.

The Fire Dept. will be monitoring it through the night and tomorrow.

That’s all we need is to get a fire going in town.

I will leave their heavenly journey in God’s Hands. I’m not in the position to judge these innocent people who died a horrible frightening death. It has been much of a shock to our local police force and THEIR families. They are heartbroken.

He had two younger siblings that survived the flood. Thank God.

Miranda Devine: Susie Wiles brings calm to Trump admin — helping the president rack up wins

By Miranda Devine Published July 9, 2025, 10:21 p.m. ET

Donald Trump calls her the “Ice Maiden.” But in person, the very private White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, is warm and hospitable — as long as you don’t cross her. She didn’t become the most powerful woman in the world without a determined glint in her eye that can silence the most spirited cabinet member. Wiles, 68, has brought a sense of order and calm to Trump’s second presidency, which has given him the space to notch up wins at breakneck speed.

In a rare interview on our new podcast, “Pod Force One,” she explained how she does it.

“I gave a piece of advice to myself when I started this job,” she told us this week in her large, sunny office in the West Wing, down the hall from the Oval Office.

“I am the chief of staff. I’m not the chief of Donald Trump.”She usually doesn’t finish until late at night, when younger staff members have gone home to their young families, and she has barely had a day off since she started.

But when people ask Wiles what the hardest thing is about her job, she replies: “Here’s what’s not hard about my job: Donald Trump. He is predictable and open and approachable and honest and honorable and committed and all of those things, which does not mean he can’t be irritated or frustrated, but I view my job as trying to keep as much of that away from him so that he can think clearly about the big picture. We’ll take care of the back office.”

That’s high praise from someone who is with Trump for hours every day, and has been with him off and on since 2015 through some of his darkest hours, including his near-death in an attempted assassination in Butler, Pa., one year ago this Sunday.

They know each other so well now that if he does get irritable when something goes wrong, she has worked out the simplest way to mollify him.

She starts early each day with a security briefing, followed by a 7:30 a.m. staff meeting in her office with deputies including Stephen Miller, Taylor Auerbach and James Blair at the big conference table that stands in front of French doors that lead to a prized private patio where she held a “cigar party” after she moved in.

“I’ve never found him to be irritated or angry for no reason,” she says.

“So, solving the underlying problem is where I focus. He’ll be angry. He’ll say so. But at the end of the day, what he wants from me is to fix whatever made him angry. So, I try to go to the root cause.”

The fact that Wiles is competent and organized means that she generally fixes problems before they reach him, a far cry from the catastrophes that used to land in his lap under his revolving door of four chiefs of staff during his first administration.
