2018 all over, GOP reps in safe seats suddenly retire so a dem can have it, turning over the House to the dems so they could impeach impeach block impeach and GOP pretend to be shocked and dismayed at what they orchestrated. Here we go again.

“2018 all over, GOP reps in safe seats suddenly retire so a dem can have it,”

It’s early yet, but Bacon is only the second Republican in a *marginal* House district to not seek re-election so far. And the other one (John James, MI-10) isn’t retiring, he’s just fleeing to seek a higher office and probably lose for a 3rd time statewide.

Bacon is a long-time squish who has always enjoyed his role as an anti-conservative Republican. Democrats were already lining up to take him on in 2026 (but not Tony Vargas this time; the Great Dem Hope is John Cavanaugh). Brett Lindstrom is probably the likely GOP nominee now, and he would be Bacon 2.0. He might even make Bacon look conservative by comparison but he’s better than Cavanaugh.

NE-2 is a D+2 district, hardly a guaranteed loss in 2026 for the GOP but it probably just vaulted to the top of the Rat pickup list. MI-10 might be #2 on the list.

Bacon actually won close election against Democratic incumbent.
We will be glad, if we gat another moderate Rep to replace him.
Likely it will be Democrat.

NE-2 is a D+2 district,
_____________

Republicans are in charge of Nebraska.
I was always surprised that they would gerrymander NE-2 to give Dems a fighting chance! Both in congress and in presidential election.
They could easily split this district and make it a lot more Republican!

“I was always surprised that they would gerrymander NE-2 to give Dems a fighting chance! Both in congress and in presidential election.”

You’re correct to include the importance of the presidential election because Nebraska awards its electoral votes by congressional district (the only other state which does that is Maine) so the Democrats actually got an electoral vote from Nebraska in both 2020 and 2024. Trump offset that by getting 1 EV from Maine both years.

I recall reading that the reason why the Republicans allowed NE-2 to be so marginal during this past round of redistricting is because of the threat that Maine Democrats would retaliate and gerrymander their state to make their 2nd congressional district less marginal if the GOP reinforced NE-2.

The NE-2 district lines aren’t a lot different now than they’ve always been, but Omaha is a deteriorating shithole and has been moving well to the left. Only the comparatively small amount of suburban territory keeps the district a tossup rather than leaning more significantly to the left.
