He stated that he would do the negotiating. I’d be worried if I were Spain.

We had guys at work that always got special treatment. An unpopular new boss would come along and put a stop to it. That was appreciated.

Silliness. The last thing we want is a big military in Europe. It just encourages the adventurism and troublemaking. We should be moving the opposite direction.
No EU country should have tanks, artillery, rocket forces, fighters or warships.

They should be restricted to a small national guard type force, a coast guard type navy, and air forces of helicopters and transport planes.

We want to do less in Europe. Because it's not really our "sphere of influence". The EU should protect the Baltics and support Ukraine.

Sanchez said Madrid considers current defense spending of 2% of GDP as “sufficient, realistic and compatible with the welfare state,” Reuters reported. Sanchez also reportedly thanked NATO allies for “respecting Spain’s sovereignty.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~``
Spain appears to want a bit of a free ride on the NATO common defense because they are more concerned with their welfare state.
I don’t know why Europe is concern about Russia, they seem to be doing a good job of becoming socialist all on their own.
The common market and the euro is top down management on their economy. They want cradle to grave social programs. Their governments control what can be said or written.
Tell me, how do they differ than Russia?
What Spain spends on its defense is not our business.
Hope this doesn’t effect our imports of Spanish Red wine.
You have it backwards. There is less to do in Europe when they are disarmed.
Also, the moslems are taking over Germany, France, the UK etc. Those weapons will be islamic in a decade. Nobody is attacking the Baltics and Ukraine is a nazi dominated dictatorship.
Trump is doing the same thing on behalf of the left and they don’t appreciate it.
I’m not sure why he didn’t choose now to pressure them with the support of the other NATO members. I see no reason why Spain should be a part of NATO.
But at least they converted their entire domestic power infrastructure to 100% renewables so they get free uninterrupted power by the blessings of Mother Gaia.
I have no faith that the countries that agreed to raise their defense funding to 5% will ever reach that amount. Many of them have never reached the 2% level they agreed to in 2014. One of them being Canada.
This is better than if he just caved in.
But really the answer is no more NATO.
What Spain spends on its defense is not our business.
Fine. But how much we spend on defending Spain is our business. And what we spend is rightly influenced by how much or how little Spain is spending on its own defense.
