Too many non-working holidays are costing the United States “BILLIONS OF DOLLARS” and hindering the country from success, President Donald Trump exclaimed on Thursday.
Trump posted to his Truth Social account against non-working holidays, suggesting that neither employers nor employees liked them and that the United States was on track to make every day a non-working holiday. The president posted the message on Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of slaves in the United States.
“Too many non-working holidays in America. It is costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed. The workers don’t want it either! Soon we’ll end up having a holiday for every once working day of the year. It must change if we are going to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump posted.
Former President Joe Biden signed Juneteenth into law as a federal holiday on June 18, 2021. Biden conducted a signing ceremony at the White House in which he pushed for greater racial equity and bemoaned new laws on election integrity that were working their way through state legislatures.
“Folks, the promise of equality is not going to be fulfilled until we become real — it becomes real in our schools and on our Main Streets and in our neighborhoods — our health care system and ensuring that equity is at the heart of our fight against the pandemic; in the water that comes out of our faucets and the air that we breathe in our communities; in our justice system — so that we can fulfill the promise of America for all people. All of our people,” Biden said.
The bill received widespread bipartisan support in Congress. It passed the Senate unanimously. In the House, just 14 Republican lawmakers voted against it.
Biden’s signing ceremony marked the first time a new national holiday had been established since Martin Luther King Day, commemorating the civil rights leader’s birthday, became a national holiday in 1983.
Whats the point of money if you can’t use or enjoy it. I think Juneteenth was ridiculous also but come on. Loads of countries have plenty of holidays.
Tell you what. Make Sunday Federal holiday and I’m game to make cuts elsewhere.
I don’t have much use for Juneteenth.
Hope it goes the way of the dodo bird.
I AGREE-—THESE HOLIDAYS COST EMPLOYERS TOO MUCH IN WAGES WITH NO OUTPUT.
Except for veteran’s holidays, I say lump them all into one day and call it good.
no one in my state over 25 has a clue what JuneTeenth is.
I looked it up and apparently it is a Texas thing that has been celebrated all over since the 1800s
that seems like bs to me, does anyone from Texas have some input/ clarification on this ?
Four holidays: Christmas, Easter, 4th of July, Thanksgiving...
That’s enough....
While we’re on the subject, I’d like to see Predident Trump change the name of Labor Day to Free Enterprise Day. Let businesses, including banks, decide whether or not to remain open.
The only days that should br mandatory holidays are Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas and New Year’s Day. You want any other day off, use a vacation day or sick day.
Close down the country between Christmas and New Years. 4-5 days. Get rid of that # of holidays. We can all rest on our laurels for our accomplishments and plan for a prosperous new year like the Chinese.
Today the holidays divide us-that’s the plan.
Keep July 4 and Thanksgiving. Celebrate the end of the ‘harvest’. It’s about US not famous men that screwed around.
Bingo! I would add just one, Washington’s birthday, the founder of our country. It was changed to “president’s day.” What nonsense.
Juneteenth? Don’t knock it.
It’s the only day I can enjoy my chitterlings.
(Sorry. Is that too racist?)
I remember in the 70s and 80s growing up there were Juneteenth festivals ((blues music)) in Dallas and whatnot.
Started in Galveston. Took a while for word to reach the island.
Amen, bro. Why is it my responsibility to pay someone else’s day off. I’ve had this conversation with family members who “work” for the “government” and their smug response is, “nobody stopped you from working for the government”. Assholes.
I’d add Memorial Day.
Volunteered at Walter Reed on the amputation ward during our war with Afghanistan. Our military’s sacrifice deserve our support.
We can have observances for both (if we want) without having forced holidays disrupting our schedules.
Tone deaf. For a multibillionaire to be giving us an alcoholic lecture that regular working Americans have too many holidays. And it cost us money? He had no problem throwing 500 billion towards Oracle and that Stargate project for his buddies. God only knows how much he’s throwing to Palantir to build a database on all Americans. And let’s give the finger to a holiday for blacks when they voted for him in record numbers last year.
Let’s do all that, and jump into a new Middle Eastern war. It’s like he’s determined to screw up the midterms.
