CORNELIUS, N.C. (WBTV/Gray News) – A woman in North Carolina said she helped a dog who was trapped inside a hot car on a 90-degree day, but a responding police officer told her she had “no right” to do so.
Suzanne Vella said on June 7, she saw a dog panting inside a hot car that was parked in a shopping center parking lot. She immediately knew she had to do something.
Vella said she called 911 and looked in the area for the dog’s owner, but after not finding them, she opened the car door – which was unlocked – and gave the dog some water.
“I was really concerned because I know it only takes a few minutes for dogs to go into heat stroke. It was a 90-degree day,” Vella said. “It wasn’t even a decision, I knew.”
Vella said when a Cornelius police officer arrived at the scene, he reprimanded her for going into the vehicle to help the dog.
“I was shocked,” Vella said. “I could tell [the officer] was really upset. He just kind of yelled at me and told me I had no right to go into the vehicle, and he repeatedly asked the owner if he wanted to press charges on me.”
According to the Cornelius Police Department, they received a 911 call at 2:18 p.m., the officer was dispatched at 2:19 p.m., and he arrived at the scene at 2:26 p.m.
That’s eight minutes that Vella thinks could have been too long to wait to act.
A cell phone video recorded by Vella captured the interaction between her and the police officer after he arrived.

(Hes the kind of cop who would kill a k-9 dog by leaving it in his squad on a hot day.)
Precisely. I’ve read stories about cops getting fired for leaving their K-9 dogs in scorching heat locked vehicles.
What a poorly written article.
You also supported a cop who shot Teddy, a harmless little dog that got loose => https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/4240083/posts?page=7#7
You’re either a boot-licker or a dog hater. Either way, you’re a poor excuse for a human being.
Right Answer Sir. No jury would convict you.
Most people do not realize that dogs do not sweat. Panting is how they control body temperature and thus are very susceptible to high temperatures particularly big dogs. Domestic dogs are decedents from Northern Wolves that did not need to sweat. Thus a big dog down south is very susceptible to heat. That is why your Shepard digs holes in your back yard, particularly under your porch or deck. They are making a place for the hot summer where it is cool.
How it should have been handled by the cop.
1. Cop: Thanks for saving the dog.
2. Lady: I was worried about the dog dying in the heat.
3. Cop: No problem, you did good. I got it from here.
4. Cop to dog owner: “You stupid asshole. You almost killed your dog except for the intervention of this kind lady.” If she did not I would be arresting you over animal cruelty due to the death of your dog.”
My blue Great Dane has a nice hole next to my front porch here in FL. I was a bit chagrined when I first saw it, but it was a fleeting thought; I trained her a bit more for inside the house during the summer.
> No jury would convict you. <
Yep. But what most folks don’t know is that the US Supreme Court has ruled that you are not guaranteed a jury trial if the criminal penalty is six months in jail or less.
It’s a disgraceful ruling, as the 6A guarantees a right to a jury trial in ALL criminal cases.
Was the dog dying? No.
If she had a Tesla she would have turned on Dog Mode and this never would have happened.
And yes, the huge display screen would say something like, “Don’t worry, my owner turned on Dog Mode to keep me cool.” (note. This mode is NOT to be used with children. If you do, E. Musk will not be held accountable)
“””I support the cop and car / dog owner.””””
We know what the cop’s opinion was and he is probably getting reamed out by his boss, but it appears the car/dog owner sides with her, so who are you supporting, the car/dog owner or the cop whose behavior is being looked at by the department?
I remember the Good Old Days when you could open a person’s car door and turn off their headlights so their battery didn’t go dead.
…either way, you're a poor excuse for a human being.
I think likewise for you, Ken H.
That’s what the Supreme Court said.
The dog was fine and I believe in property rights and of not trespassing.
The cop did not arrest the lady or the owner and the owner did not press charges for the trespass.
By not waiting for the cop, the law states the owner was not able to be held responsible for an offense against an animal—if one even had occurred.
Entering property without permission is always a risky endeavor. You hope the property owner will be reasonable, but there isn’t a requirement for that.
You’d do well to stop defending your comment.
Free advice.
Phuck that cop.other cops should rip him a new one.
I've done that. But not in the last 30 years.
It was before headlights turned themselves off after a minute or so, since that requires a microprocessor controlled electrical system. But back when the lights were on a simple switch, yeah, it was considered a courtesy to save somebody else's battery.
No more.
“””I support the cop and car / dog owner.””””
It can’t be both since they disagree with each other.
The dog survived after being rescued which was done after it took too long for the cop to arrive, the department is looking into the cop’s take which you are siding with and the car/dog owner appears to disagree with you.
So far you look wrong all the way around, of course you can call the department and tell them to lay off the cop’s error in judgement.
“An internal investigation into our officer’s actions is underway.”
