WASHINGTON, June 15 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump vetoed an Israeli plan in recent days to kill Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, two U.S. officials told Reuters on Sunday.
"Have the Iranians killed an American yet? No. Until they do we're not even talking about going after the political leadership," said one of the sources, a senior U.S. administration official.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said top U.S. officials have been in constant communications with Israeli officials in the days since Israel launched a massive attack on Iran in a bid to halt its nuclear program.
They said the Israelis reported that they had an opportunity to kill the top Iranian leader, but Trump waved them off of the plan.
The officials would not say whether Trump himself delivered the message. But Trump has been in frequent communications with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
When asked about Reuters report, Netanyahu, in an interview on Sunday with Fox News Channel's "Special Report With Bret Baier," said: "There's so many false reports of conversations that never happened, and I'm not going to get into that."
""But I can tell you, I think that we do what we need to do, we'll do what we need to do. And I think the United States knows what is good for the United States," Netanyahu said.
Trump has been holding out hope for a resumption of U.S.-Iranian negotiations over Tehran's nuclear program. Talks that had been scheduled for Sunday in Oman were canceled as a result of the strikes.
Trump told Reuters on Friday that "we knew everything" about the Israeli strikes.

One analyst said a while ago the rivals for the aged leader are suspicious of each other, hate each other and of course are not liked at all by millions of Iranians. He said that will complicate the replacement regime after he dies of old age.

That is a truly stupid statement.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its Quds Force, were responsible for the deaths of at least 603 American troops in Iraq between 2003 and 2011. This accounts for approximately 17% of all U.S. service personnel deaths during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Many others were injured of course.
About 48 Americans were killed by Iran proxy Hamas in the October 7 massacre, and about 13 were taken hostage. The last living American hostage was released May 12. 2025. Hamas still has four American hostages, but they are believed to have been killed.
It keeps a very large club over the head of Iranian leaders to make sure our troops and bases aren’t attacked. Good move. Trump is a peacenik. I approve wholeheartedly. Israel has every right to protect itself. Unless Pearl Harbor happens again, let’s prepare for war and keep the peace. Cheering on Israel is as far as I hope he goes, but he knows better than I do.
I trust Trump completely. He sees a picture far beyond what I learn by limited reading. The decisions he makes are to protect me and mine. I’ll keep supporting him, whatever those decisions are. Given his personality and beliefs, I can’t believe he’ll ever do anything I can’t support.

Some 400 in Iraq, as I recall, but none recently. Best to wait until they kill a few Americans, then send a strongly worded letter, before getting all excited. Jawboning always is best, even if the other guy is just stalling until he gets the chance [ when you are all laid back, fat and happy at your prodigiously successful jawboning ] to sneak up and kill you.
Its not our problem if Iran gets a nuke, since they will only use in on Israel, not NYC or Chicago, as they once said. I’m sure they will have stopped chanting their foreign policy of “Death to America” because 47.

I thought the guy had already fled to Russ but apparently Khomeini is holed up in a bunker somewhere in Iran. Its likely they will allow him to flee to Russia and he can sit and commiserate with Assad.
I’ve just been listening to a guy on YouTube who’s Dad is trapped in Tehran. Apparently all the government buildings have been destroyed with the top officials. Tehran has basically fallen. What’s left of the IRGC are all out on the border of Iraq or in the mountains and that’s where the outgoing attacks on Israel from the remaining missile launchers are coming from.
I saw a video where you can hear people up on the roof tops chanting death to Khomeini. Reports are coming in from Tehran that all the people around Khomeini have been taken out.
Don’t be surprised if you see Palahvi leading a transitional government in Iran in a month from now. It looks lime Israel really is taking the regime out.
I don’t see the Iranian people defeating the hardliners.

If Iran does not have the money to pay the hired Palestinian thugs, then there is a chance.
Despite early impressive victories, it is now clear that Israel cannot alone achieve its strategic goals in this war. It has damaged but has been unable to totally destroy Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Nor has it been able to critically decapitate Iran’s leadership, destrot the thug infrastructure that holds down the Iranian people. The mullahs are still in power and are firing ballistic missiles with effect.
Trump is being heavily pressured by neocons and others to join the Israeli offensive in this war. It is doubtful that the majority of the American people would favor a war with Iran. His Presidency is in the balance.

Iran is radar blind now, so a few B-2s will not be seen by anyone when they drop a passel of GBU-57b MOBs. The US will have plausible denial.
Those unnamed sources (if there are indeed any sources) need to be idetified, arrested and charged or fired. Too many in our government want to feel themselves important by having the media fawn over them as a “source”
