Ukraine hits bridge linking Crimea to Russia with underwater explosives
The Guardian ^ | 3 June 2025 | Owen Amos and Jemma Crew

Ukraine has detonated a massive underwater blast targeting the key road and rail bridge connecting the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula to Russia, damaging its underwater supports.

The operation, claimed by Kyiv’s SBU security service, is the second high-profile operation by Ukraine in days striking significant Russian assets after a sophisticated drone raid on Moscow’s strategic bomber fleet on Sunday.

The attack came as Ukraine confirmed it had been invited to the Nato summit later this month, after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned it would be a “victory” for Russia if it was not present.

The latest strike on the 12-mile-long Kerch bridge – a prestige project of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, which he opened in 2018 – comes amid what appear to be determined efforts by Ukraine to change the narrative promoted by the Trump administration that Kyiv holds few cards in the war.

The mining of the bridge, which is heavily defended by Russian forces, follows the audacious long-range drone attack on airbases deep in side Russia, which Zelenskyy claimed had damaged “34% of [Russia’s] strategic cruise missile carriers”.

The Sovs were beaten by the Afghani tribes, they couldn’t run the country.

Zelenskyy is doing all he can to keep the war going. He doesn’t want it to end.

Really? Z agreed to the US plan of a total 30 day ceasefire. Putin rejected it, demanding Ukraine surrender.

And yet they won every battle there, scheduled withdrawal by 1989 in 1985 and graciously left as planned bombing the shit out of everything what has left.
And that despite the gynormous help to Taliban from the US and China.

Who helped them kick the living crap out of the US forces and force them on the run thirty years later?

Which is why they would first seize and secure land across the Dnieper enroute to taking Odessa.

Ukraine is focused on a pillar on bridge while the Russian army closes in a major city:

https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/03/europe/russia-forces-advance-northern-ukraine-sumy-intl

Russian forces have continued to advance in the northern Ukrainian region of Sumy, bringing the regional capital within range of their drones and artillery, according to Ukrainian officials and analysts.

A spokesman for the Ukrainian military in the area, Ivan Shevtsov, said that in addition to trying to advance towards Sumy city, Russian forces were constantly shelling the area and more evacuations of civilians were taking place.

“At the moment, the territory that the enemy has already occupied is about 15 kilometers along the front line and about 6-7 kilometers deep,” Shevtsov said. He added that the Russians were trying to advance towards the town of Yunakivka, within a few kilometers of their current positions.

Cards that are played are one less card.

Nah!

In wars, there are more than one deck of cards. And the decks can easily be produced in large quantities.

Carpet bombing, similar to what we did to German cities during WW-2, would stop the war quickly. Kyiv could be the first target.

Dpn't forget that Moscow could just as easily be the prime target for Ukraine, and Ukraine has demonstrated that they have the capability to strike Moscow after they attacked those airfields in distant areas of Russia.

Make a different wish.

They mostly did, as the ambush is normally w hit and run attack. To call ambush a battle is not particularly correct.

All this would have ended long ago if Zelensky had cooperated. His recent actions are to inflame it to keep it going. He’s doing it to save his ass.

Cooperated? You mean if Z surrendered.

Negotiations before Putins invasion of Ukraine were held in Belarus and Turkey in 2022, according to the Polish Foreign Mininster who was there, the Russians essentially demanded Ukraine's surrender.

Russia did not want peace, only the capitulation of Ukraine. Jakub Kumoch, former Secretary of State of Polish President Andrzej Duda, who accompanied the Ukrainian delegation to negotiations with Russia in Belarus and Turkey in the spring of 2022, told the newspaper The Polish Times.

"Let us call it mildly: singularly. It was a draft with the comments of both sides. The document was clearly prepared before the Russian invasion and by the Russians. He provided, among other things, the recognition of the annexation of Crimea, the so-called independence of the eastern regions of Ukraine, the reduction of the size of the Ukrainian army, bilingualism, the ban on joining NATO, perpetual neutrality, etc. There were also purely demeaning elements, such as a commitment to denazification or the introduction of the Great Patriotic War, as the Russians call their contribution to World War II. Things that A State never imposes on State B. Meanwhile, Russia has brought in the entire list of laws that Ukraine is to change. It began with the Constitution."

In 1979-1989 they enjoyed a much better control than the US forces at every moment in Afghanistan where the US strategically lost around 2010.

Actually, for about the last 2 years of the first Trump presidency, there were virtually no attacks against American bases, and the Taliban was basically neutered. Which is what prompted Trump to end the occupation by Americans in Afghanistan.

And when it comes to benevolent occupation, the women and girls in Afghanistan enjoyed freedoms (like attending school) which they didn't have under the Taliban or under Russian occupation.

The U.S. may be hated in many parts of the world, but when we're there, the countries end up being better off than they were without us. Same cannot be said for Russian occupation anywhere they go.

Not if the Ukrainian capacity degrades enough.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Ukraine seems to be getting stronger as the war rages on.

—”Have to say I am impressed by the resilience of that bridge.”

A crappy bridge is worthless.

There was a bridge in North Viet Nam that the us never did knock out after hundreds of sorties over the years until 1972.

“Capt. Bill Meyerholt observed as the missile streaked toward the bridge and made a good hit; when smoke cleared, there was no visible damage to the bridge. The 250 lb (110 kg) warheads merely charred the massive structure.”

Which is why they would first seize and secure land across the Dnieper enroute to taking Odessa. It’s important in military campaigns to have secure lines of communication.

Woah! A military strategist working to advise Russia on how to proceed.

Don't you think Russia has its own military strategists who have considered the best way of conducing the war? If they haven't done as you suggested, it's because they know better.

Zelenskyy is doing all he can to keep the war going. He doesn’t want it to end. If the war ends, he will likely have to live in exile.

Actually, once the war is over, Zelensky will have to leave the presidency and won't have to live in exile, and even worse for your expectations, Zelensky will be treated as a hero by the Ukrainians.

On the other side, Putin cannot stop the war, because he hss committed Russia to a very unpopular and ill-conceived war, which has decimated the country's economy and devastated its military, with over a million dead and injured soldiers. He's be prosecuted for doing such heavy damage to the country, so, he's stuck in seeing the war come to a fruitful end for Russia, which will never happen anyway.

Biggest loser: Putin. No doubt.

Are you telling it with a straight face? During Soviet “occupation” there was liquor and girls in mini skirts in Kabul.
And all kids were at schools that the Soviets have built the guys like Wilson paid Taliban to torch and kill pupils.
The US had minimal control over the area and were constantly losing ground. Wherever the outpost was attacked with casualties the area was permanently abandoned. There definitely weren’t attacks once the personnel was contained behind the wire. What about attacks on ANA that actually did the fighting later in war? As for neutered Taliban everybody have seen it all. It was so neutered that Pentagon had to pay hefty bribes to let the remaining force escape. And do you really believe that the place has become better?
