MAGA is pushing Republicans forward to MAGA, not just rallying behind whatever POS budget thingee the house will toss into the hopper before the stench is so bad they clear out of town.

It’s amazing to see so many on this website just jump on board with this spending bill. It’s not much different than what the democrats propose - just a slow pace of destruction.

I hope the senate has the guts to at least make the doge cuts permanent.

Good but does it have the votes? you can cut everything but if you lose votes it doesn’t go through

Talk is cheap Mike. If you have the votes then make it happen.

Spending bills come from the congress and senate. It's like nobody showed up for work over the past 15 years to legislate spending appropriations bills, and once Trump arrives to get to work getting spending under control, the senate decides it is their job after all??!!!

Shameless uniparty soldiers are what republican legislators are. These guys just show up at the marathon race finish line, like they actually put in the work....

It spends more than Biden ever did.

We joke about the uniparty but I don’t think we recognize how accurate the description is.

Trump is a big spender. Bigger than Biden or Obummer? Certainly bigger than Bush or Clinton.

It is their “Golden F-35” (instead of a parachute) so they can buy that house in the new, improved Lahaina, Malabu, or one of the new 90 story skyscrapers in Miami, courtesy of US.

the Senate “can” - though it then triggers reconciliation which would probably enveutally strip any positive out of the bill...

They can only change it so much. I thought they can’t do Doge cuts in the reconciliation bill because of some stupid senate rules.

I can think of some reasons, why people on Free Republic are pushing this bill :

1. The bill is supposed to make the first term Trump tax cuts permanent. The Trump tax cuts expire at the end of this year. Doing nothing about that situation results in a major tax increase for all of us.

2. Trump is our guy, Trump is firmly behind it, and Freepers trust Trump.

3. Many on Free Republic understand that you can find any individual piece of any legislation which you dislike, but don’t think that alone is a reason to scuttle the entire thing.

The DOGE cuts are not from the area of government that can fit within Reconciliation. They CAN’T be in this bill because if they are, then the bill can’t be passed with only 51 votes.

And don’t stand up and say to trash the Filibuster. The Filibuster is a conservative Senate Rule and were it not for Simena and Manchin we would have lost all sorts of rights (like gun ownership) by having those items voted purely 51 votes required. Only the filibuster enabled the GOP to stop things. (It is a conservative Senate Rule because it puts up an obstacle to passing laws. Since conservatism wants less involvement of government in our lives, anything obstructing new laws is conservative.)

Anyway, that’s why DOGE cuts cannot be in this bill. They don’t qualify for Reconciliation — avoiding filibuster.
