Alberta’s threat to divorce Canada is getting more serious than ever.
Premier Danielle Smith announced this week that the oil-rich province could hold its first-ever referendum on independence in 2026, as the area’s pro-51st state activists ramp up calls to ditch the Great White North in favor of the star-spangled banner.
“Staying with Canada is finished,” Alberta resident Steve Harvey, 52, told The Post. “We’ve been an eagle locked up in a cage for decades because of Canada. It’s time that we’re set free.”
Alberta’s beef with Canada comes from growing anger over what’s viewed as the Liberal government chocking the province’s oil industry.
“They’ve blocked new pipelines, cancelled various oil and gas projects and banned the very tanker ships needed to carry these resources to new markets,” Smith said this week in a livestreamed address to Albertans.
“We just want to be free to develop and export that incredible wealth of resources we have for the benefit of our families and future generations.”
Fed up Albertans, who held a separation rally last week at the Edmonton legislature attended by close to 500, are also urging their countrymen to write to the White House to express support to join the union.
“This thing is real. There is momentum,” said Edmonton resident Jordon Kosik, who runs a Facebook group advocating for Alberta separation.
It’s a standoff that’s been going on for years, but discontent has brewed stronger lately, with many Albertans emboldened by President Trump’s calls to make Canada his “cherished 51st state.”
Last week’s Liberal win was the last straw for many.
“I made it clear that Albertans will no longer tolerate the way we’ve been treated by the federal Liberals over the past 10 years,” a fed-up Smith warned in March after meeting new Prime Minister Mark Carney.

My understanding of UN rules of debt division comes down to where the debt was spent. Since very little of that debt can be shown to have been spent in Alberta, Alberta may very well have to adopt very little of the debt in separating from Canada.
The native tribes would be more problematic because, for them, they see loss on federal funding if they go with Alberta.
There’s no living with leftists. They’re leeches and they suck the productivity of of everything.
President Trump should offer Premier Danielle Smith Statehood, and top of the line Military Weapons and Support in exchange for Mineral and Natural Resource Rights, and Public Lands.
make the deal and then declare bankruptcy over the ND part.
No, you do not understand. I’m not proposing we give that area away to Canada. We get all of BC, SK, and AB.
BUT, greater Vancouver would become part of Washington state. WA might get another Rep in the house, but they would still only have two Senators. That keeps all commie voters in Vancouver from corrupting the rest of the new state and getting two commie senators from BC. Lump the BC radical commies in with the existent commies in Washington State.
My dad was born in Red Deer, Alberta.
I hope they vote to join the US.
Pretty damn cold up there in winter.
Don’t do it, Trump! Alberta is full of...Canadians.
Alberta leans overwhelmingly Conservative. If they were part of the US, they’d be a red state.
Yes, I’d take all of those but I’d carve Vancouver out of BC. We don’t want that leftist shithole.
I’d be more than willing to trade New England for Canada’s West. Everybody would be so much happier. We’d be rid of a bunch of leftists, they’d be free to freeze in the darkness in their socialist paradise.
I’m assuming we’d just deport all the leftover liberals in Vancouver, et al to Ontario.
Alberta is a big net donor to the national budget, not a net recipient. Alberta could probably pay the tribes MORE and still be better off considering they’d no longer be sending money off to Ottawa.
In addition to that, with the Gaia Worship lifted they could build pipelines and drill for more oil - of which they have a crap ton - and rake in far more money than they’re already making from it.
Then America must invade. If the Albertan referendum is to become a state, and the Canadians block it, a massive American invasion is the answer. Rush against and encircle Ottawa and Toronto in the east, slam through the prairies cutting them off from the rest of Canada. In a month the Canadian leadership will be in Gitmo or worse.
Seize the Canadian oilfields and welcome Alberta as the 51st state.
Skip BC.
I like your plan except I'd prefer not to take Vancouver at all. If we had to take them, then yes, merge them with Washington State BUT force them to surrender Conservative Eastern Washington in return. BC gets more land and more right leaning voters and offloads a bunch of Leftists - making BC a guaranteed red state. Washington + Vancouver remains a leftist shithole so nothing is lost there. Net plus one red state and two more Senators.
> Trump throws one little bone....and we’re 100s of articles down the road on something that will never happen. lol <
I heard that Greenland will secede from Denmark and unite with Alberta. The new country will be called Greenberta. It’s a done deal!
Pass it on.
You don’t want the territories, they’re full of native welfare cases.
I worked with a lot of Albertan oil field hands in the oil fields world wide. They are basically Texans with a funny accent. Aint much difference but they really need to work on their accent. In a bar fight they will have your back.
When I was in retail, when an American tourist was visiting, they often asked me if I had been born in Kansas, so I assume the Alberta accent is similar.
