Thune: ‘I Don’t Want to See Taxes Go Up’
Breitbart ^ | 05/09/2025qw | Pam Key

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said Friday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that he did not want to see taxes go up on anybody when asked about President Donald Trump’s comments on taxes.

On Truth Social Trump posted, “The problem with even a “TINY” tax increase for the RICH, which I and all others would graciously accept in order to help the lower and middle income workers, is that the Radical Left Democrat Lunatics would go around screaming,“Read my lips,” the fabled Quote by George Bush the Elder that is said to have cost him the Election. NO, Ross Perot cost him the Election! In any event, Republicans should probably not do it, but I’m OK if they do!!!”

Host Joe Kernen said, “The president wants to help, I think working class people look at the tariffs, look at all these things. The case could be made that maybe some redistribution or some movement on on who pays the lion’s share of taxes, maybe you could reallocate some. Is this the right way to do it?”

Thune said, “I don’t want to see taxes go up on anybody. We’re all about lowering taxes, not raising taxes. But I do think the president, he’s not a conventional president. People didn’t vote for a conventional president and I think his policies reflect that.”

He added, “I think that the people around him understand what he’s trying to achieve here. And that is if you look at what he’s proposing, there’s particular emphasis on working Americans.”

I don’t think Thune is right about this. Trump has some opportunities to pull the carpet out from under some of these leftists. If they can do the math and figure out a way where nobody - income earners, retirees, SS recipients, everyone - has zero taxes if they make less than $200,000… or even $150,000… and this comes at a price of 1% more for those making over $400,000 for example (I don’t know what numbers they are debating or which numbers work) then they steal all the thunder from the left. 1). They show they are protecting the working class people and 2) the rich WILL pay more. The left can’t argue anything with success imo. It won’t be a GWB read my lipsmoment at all. It will be seen as a great compromise that protects the vast majority of people.

My solution is no taxes on citizens, most taxes by tariffs and flat sales tax... and huge taxes on illegal aliens, or on aliens permitted to work in the USA. Let’s flip the script on illegals, make them pay hugely with taxation if they want to sneak into the USA. No citizenship, then pay bigly.

I'd argue EVERYONE should have to pay taxes. You need skin in the game.

Perhaps it might make folks pay more attention to things in DC.

It could be configured so that those high earners could be given a way to avoid the new tax. IDK how. Donations to a charity, non-profit of some kind, etc.

Bush1 cost himself the election by raising taxes

Same deal w Trump.

Byeee House, hello impeachment

I realize many here will call it 4D chess

But please explain how they can call it A HUGE TAX CUT — by raising taxes

There’s no excuse for an unforced error here.

If you raise taxes on ThE rIcH you can never say you cut taxes

heck, even make it voluntary. just ask the .1% to contribute 5M each voluntarily to give back what they stole. they made billions off the backs of the American working class. stealing their jobs and the value of their money.

let’s see if the buffets of the world will pony up. i won’t hold my breath.

Trump has run to the left of the moderates in the Senate. Not good.
