About that hug ... Whitmer risks backlash from Democrats as she embraces Trump in Michigan

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — First came their much-analyzed Oval Office moment. Next, their subject-to-interpretation hug.

The two interactions between President Donald Trump and a sometime antagonist, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, reflect the Democratic governor’s efforts to move past last year’s hard-fought campaign and find common ground with the Republican president — at risk of political backlash.

Whitmer, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, shared a hug with Trump as he arrived in her home state on Tuesday, less than a month after she shielded her face from cameras during an Oval Office appearance alongside Trump.

It’s typical for a governor or another high-ranking state official to greet the president when he steps off Air Force One in their state, a tradition that has historically transcended partisanship.

But the embrace between Trump and Whitmer was notable at a time when Americans are increasingly saying Trump’s priorities are off and Democrats are agitating for their leaders to take a more confrontational approach to the president.

I will admit I don't like the b!tch, however IMHO the two parties should have some common ground and be able to work together, maybe Whitmer can. That hug goes a long way to overcome the Pelosi doctrine of "There's nothing we can work together."

On the flip side I can't recall anything Obama did that I supported so I can understand total adverse reactions to the other party.

I’m surprised she didn’t have a knife in that left hand to stab President Trump in the back. Gretchen Whitmer IS EVIL.

True but she’s smart enough to know that to retain power she has to embrace Trump (pun intended). Blue- collar workers in MI became red-collar.

Kind of a shame, really.

She needs to go.

She's evil personified and cannot be trusted.

To me this is about the source.....the dispicable ap doing all it can to portray President Trump as radioactive as possible. Suggesting anyone who gets near him risks being shunned.

Not that I think she would turn away from her party and become independent or republican, but there have been several others who did before her. Her warm greeting of Pres. Trump is a good step in the right direction, unlike hiding her face. Even Fetterman has been making some sense lately. Other hard liner libtards want Pres. Trump impeached like looney toon Raskin, and have learned nothing from their earlier failed attempts to destroy him. One curious thing I have not seen is any republican politician deflecting to the dark side, although we do have plenty of do nothing rhinos.

Watch Whitmer closely. Is she smart and working with Trump in preparation for a Presidential run? While the current frontrunner, AOC, is sleeping with the Socialists and holding anti-Trump rallies in Blue States, Whitmer is doing the tough job of running a State. If she can work with Trump to help Michigan, she will become the front-runner. Unless she has skeletons in the closet or does something stupid.

Whitmer showed her true colors during the pandemic. But college-age voters in 2028 would have been born around 2006-2010. They would have been nine years old or younger. COVID will be a distant memory, just like 9-11 is ancient history to them. Newsome cannot work with Trump, the radical California legislature, and voters will not let him. They will continue to push radical policies with or without Newsome. His best option is the Senate or the House. Waltz is on life support; he is only electable in Minnesota. Under any other circumstance, 2028 would have been Schimer's turn. But he, like Stein, has a Jewish problem. I am not being antisemitic, just being honest. We have had only 2 Catholic Presidents. Are we ready for a Jewish President? Since 1789, there have only been 32 Jewish Governors. Most of them are in the Blue States, with large urban Jewish populations. Pritzger is Jewish, but he has a Newsome problem. Too much radical legislation signed into law, especially 2A laws, will turn off voters nationally.

In my humble opinion, unless a dark horse candidate appears, the most formidable RAT ticket today would be Whitmer/Stien. Just do not think a Jewish person at the top of the ticket would garner enough votes. Even Obama had to claim to be a Christian.

I’m convinced President Trump deliberately cultivates that “toxicity”, in order to force Democrats to embrace the unpopular side of 80/20 issues.

He figured out that if Democrats hate him enough, their knee-jerk response will be to take the opposite side of whatever issue he embraces.

Each day he identifies another 80/20 issue and embraces the 80% side - and the Democrats double down on the 20% side just to prove they are the opposite of Trump.

But it only works if they hate his guts.. the day they stop hating him is the day he loses his political advantage.

The only thing she’s got going is that she has a decent rack. Otherwise she’s a double bagger. One bag over her head and another for yours.

I’m not so sure about him trying to embarrass her, take a look at the Selfridge speech (another posting on FR), he gives her (and other dems) high praise in saving Selfridge.
