Like millions of American citizens and immigrants, Ivan filed his taxes last year. But Ivan, 54, a Massachusetts resident who hails from Colombia, is worried a recent agreement between the IRS and Immigration and Customs Enforcement means he is in danger of being deported for doing what he believed was the right thing.
And if taxpayers like Ivan decide not to file taxes because the IRS has said it will share certain tax information filed by undocumented immigrants with ICE, it could cumulatively eliminate billions in tax revenue and create “a massive problem” for citizens and immigrants alike, experts said.
Undocumented immigrants paid $96.7 billion in federal, state and local taxes in 2022, according to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, a nonprofit, nonpartisan tax policy organization. About $59.4 billion of that went to the federal government and $37.3 billion to state and local governments, according to the group’s analysis. It found that even a 10% decrease in the number of undocumented immigrants filing their taxes would mean a decrease of $9.5 billion a year in tax revenue.
“The biggest issue from a revenue standpoint is that opening up tax records for immigration enforcement is going to reduce tax compliance of immigrants, whether undocumented or not, and that will have a significant impact on tax revenue,” said Tom Bowman, a policy counsel with the Center for Democracy and Technology’s security and surveillance project.

The cost will. Be immense for sure, BUT we spend over $1 trillion dollars on illegals every year paying for the damage they do to this nation and to citizen families. The cost of litigating would be well worth it as we would be saving over a trillion dol,are every single year once they are all deported. 3fen if we had to spend say $2 trillion on the cases in 10 years doing so, well will have saved agout $8 trillion during that time.
$9.5B? Easy, just cut congressional staff, pay, and retirement benefits to make up the difference. That’s a win.
Baloney. The only reason they file at all is because they get money BACK. There is an entire industry in high-hispanic areas helping them game the tax code to qualify for EITC. Every penny they pay in payroll taxes is returned, and then some. And then they send it to whatever home country they came from.
Yea, we might lose some tax revenue from illegals not paying under their stolen SSNs, but we’ll gain money from them not claiming all the child credits, welfare credits, plus think of all the fines the gov’t will gain charging employers for the hiring illegals and commuting tax fraud!
I would guess that most of them are not sending checks in to Uncle Sam on April 15, but instead are getting money back.
If they are illegally here, how are they getting documentation to file taxes?
They can’t have a SSN, so they need a TIN, which I feel like being illegally here should disqualify them from being able to get.
“IRS agreement with ICE to share immigrants’ info could lead to billions less in tax revenue 10% fewer undocumented immigrants filing their taxes would mean a decrease of $9.5 billion a year in tax revenue, a tax policy organization found.”
it would also mean yet ANOTHER Federal law being broken by these illegal alien invaders, so yet ANOTHER reason to expel them ...
1) We should fine the business’s that hired them.
2) If they used a fake SSN, we should jail them
That will make up for any lost revenue.
Any taxes they pay doesn’t come close to the amount they are costing us. They are parasite ticks just sucking the blood out of our country...
I want them all to go home and leave the USA...
Pure gaslighting BS. Illegals cost 150 billion a year MINUS 30 billion in taxes. Every illegal household costs the government $24,000 MINUS $10,000 in taxes. The “lifetime drain” is $68,000 per illegal. The spawn of illegals cost the taxpayer about $9,000 each. Every American pays $1,156 a year MINUS $957 in tax paid by the illegals. I could go on with education and healthcare. Illegals are a ENORMOUS DRAIN on the country even when their TAXES are taken in account.
Balanced off against all the welfare, food stamps, covid bonuses and social security payments illegals have been claiming...
9.5 billion sounds like pocket change compared to how much we are saving via doge. Think about how much was spent on Ukraine alone.
Right. It's the NET effect on expenditures--not the HEADLINE effect on revenue.
NBC SO SAD. 😭
We’re making up for it in tariffs and other cost savings of NOT having these INVADERS sponge off of We the Taxpayer.
So we are supposed to accept a study like this at face value because? Someone who his immigrated illegally and works illegally suddenly want to pay federal taxes because "a study" says so? Or, are they filing to get an earned income tax credit?
I'm willing to bet that the number filing for that reason alone is damn near 100%.
Who thinks illegals file taxes and pay or do they get refunds and credits?
Or one bag of groceries.🙄
