The speaker also stopped short of guaranteeing House approval this week of a GOP budget plan.

Speaker Mike Johnson said Monday that the House will provide President Donald Trump with “space” to carry out his massive global tariff regime, even as some GOP lawmakers openly plead with Trump to negotiate off-ramps before the levies kick in on Wednesday.
“We’re going to give him the space necessary to do it, and we’ll see how it all develops,” Johnson told reporters Monday afternoon.
The speaker went on to argue Trump is “engaging and trying to fix” trade deficits.
The GOP pushback is coming in the form of bipartisan legislation that would reclaim congressional authority on tariffs from the president. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) co-authored a Senate bill introduced last week, and Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) plans to introduce a House version of the legislation Monday.
Trump said Monday he’d veto Grassley’s bill, and Johnson indicated he has no plans to put Bacon’s on the floor. “I think you’ve got to give the president the latitude, the runway to do what it is he was elected to do,” he replied when asked about the legislation.
Johnson on Monday also declined to publicly commit to putting the reworked Senate budget plan on the House floor this week amid deep opposition from a band of fiscal hawks. However, senior GOP aides granted anonymity to comment on internal discussions say the plan is to still push through with a final vote Wednesday afternoon as planned.

Now pass the trump agenda “speaker” Johnson.
Unlike the Rino cucks in the Senate.
Thank you Mike Johnson! Geez, the hysteria in the media and amongst the Left is just ridiculous.
All he has to do is wait for the courts to stop it...
Right mikie???
Because we know that you ain’t doing crap about that...
Right mikie???
>> even as some GOP lawmakers openly plead with Trump
“My portfolio, my insiders’ portfolio!!”
Agreed, doubly so. Trump can negotiate. Neither the House, nor the Senate can. It would be just too unwieldy. It seems that negotiation is an Executive Branch function.
“GOP lawmakers openly plead with Trump” I’m sure they do-please, please-an off ramp for my preferred stock options/insider trading, my pension investments, the overseas production my wife/sons/daughters have invested heavily in-waaa, waaa. Screw those people-let the lawmakers own the same investment risks as the “little people”...
Thank you Speaker Johnson!
I SERIOUSLY WONDER HOW MANY OF THE 535 IN CONGRESS EVEN KNEW HOW TARIFFS WORK & EXACTLY HOW HIGH SOME OF THOSE TARIFFS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES ACTUALLY WERE.
A QUIZ would have been interesting
Johnson has actually done a pretty decent job since Trump became President. But he was near useless as an opposition Speaker.
I think Johnson had a talking to a little while ago by Trump because even after Trump was elected he started to go a little soft but was reminded who won and who did all of the heavy lifting for the party once again.
That’s probably true.
Oh King!
Live forever!!
