Gov. Morrisey Joins HHS Secretary Kennedy to Announce Initiatives to Make West Virginia Healthy.

What is a food desert? It’s a neighborhood where there are NO healthy food choices to be made. I worked in food deserts for decades, slinging Hot Cheeto garbage for people to eat. Salty Snacks are a food staple in the hood. I was often asked why work in the ghetto? It was a commission job and that’s where I could make the most money.
OMG, such fat shaming by Kennedy! “Governor, you look like you ate Governor Morrisey!”
I’ll post the judicial diktat prohibiting this MAHA endeavor as soon as it I see it this morning.
Salt does not harm you. It does not cause High Blood Pressure.
And it makes everything taste better!
That’s up for some debate, but the problem with many “salty snacks” is they’re just empty calories with little nutritional value. There are exceptions, such as nuts or peanut butter snacks, popcorn or whole grain crackers, but cheese puffs, corn chips, potato chips and most crackers are more or less, just for fun junk foods. Having said that, I like junk foods sometimes; whether or not they should be removed from the SNAP program is a political hot potato, which could have disastrous effects on the next election. People don’t like to be told what they can or cannot eat, even if someone else is paying for it.
The WV Governor is also banning the bad food dyes in school meals effective this fall. He’s having a meeting with Kennedy today.
This is not in the Gov’s job description , stick to running the state and stop being a Dictator
Keep on getting your health information from the National Inquirer.
I know this would be a bureaucratic nightmare, but SNAP food should be pre-packed in boxes, with only healthy food in it. This idea that sub sandwiches and fried chicken are OK if they’re bought at a grocery store is crazy, too.
If people want to pay the money for it, let them eat what they want. But for SNAP and other programs, I support limiting the options to nutritional essentials.
Matt Walsh came out in favor of this and later read a comment to the effect “Poor people deserve a treat once in a while.” Boo hoo. The richest poor people in the world can spring for their own junk food as far as I’m concerned. They can use some of the welfare I give them under the hilariously misnamed Earned Income Tax Credit
I love salt more than sugar.
I eat all I want. I just turned 80 and I am now on Valsartan which controls my blood pressure.
My doctor has never said to stop or reduce my salt intake.
Celery is a good snack.
Sometimes I buy a bunch of radish.
I like olives but those may be too salty for the program?
Grapes are delicious you can freeze them too.
Bananas are fun and you can dry them into chips. For a challenge try to use the stem as a handle and peel it from the bottom. That’s the way most other primates eat them. Good fingernails help.
Papaya is sweet with a spoon. It’s like an orange avocado! Only with more seeds. Avocado is good usually I just cut in half, remove the pit, and pour vinaigrette into the crevice. But you can chop, slice, dice, mush whatever suits your fancy.
Mangos are delicious. You can taste the enzymes with every bite.
Pineapples are a good challenge but be careful where you eat them they’ve taken on a secondary meaning. It’s best to just cut them up at home. Taking a whole fresh pineapple in public might draw unwanted attention (unless you’re interested in that sort of thing). Indeed in researching this post I’ve discovered pineapple has multiple meanings.
Cherries. Enough said.
Get one of those fancy tasteless soda waters and add a splash of fruit concentrate. As good as soda. Has a bit of sugar but so do all fruits. If you’re diabetic check with your doctor about all of this.
I like cabbage. All the colors of cabbage. The united colors of cabbage all sliced in a bowl is almost cole slaw. Just needs dressing. Which you can add in moderation or gluttony. I make slaw, and sometimes I just make or use a vinegar salad dressing.
I dip romaine lettuce in salad dressing too. Like Neil Peart I especially like the leaves closer to the heart.
Speaking of Rush I like pears. You can eat them like an apple. Or slice or dice them. Can throw them in most salads too. Including fruit salads.
Oranges are delicious and fun to juggle.
Now all this fruit may upset the stomach. Sourdough bread and a plate of cheese can pretty much make a meal. Add some tomato if you like.
Did I mention figs? There are 100s of varieties of fig if you tried it could take you two years before you had the same species twice. Though on SNAP they may be too costly to try.
I agree but there may indeed be a real problem with a lack of healthy food options in certain neighborhoods. I can’t tell you whether it’s a sociological issue or an an economic one but I lean towards the latter. It’s cheaper and easier to open a small store that sells bags and jars and bottles that last 100 years, or are delivered in trucks and cans by jobbers that manage the display cases for you, than it is running a fresh fruit and vegetable stand or a fresh meats butcher shop or fish market. Perhaps if SNAP cards could only be used in a specific way there would be more shopping options. Again the economics - if the money is driven there, people will build the infrastructure to get their hands on it.
Paging Oliver Anthony “Rich Men North of Richmond”
“...and taxes ought not to pay, for your box of fudge rounds”
More problems are probably caused by low, rather than high, salt consumption.
It was another myth that big Med invented to get people to eat less salt.
It’s a wonder so many of us are still alive!
“”””I was often asked why work in the ghetto? It was a commission job and that’s where I could make the most money.””””
When I sold encyclopedias I almost only worked black neighborhoods, all the people I would hire would always think the easy selling would be in the rich neighborhoods, while I wouldn’t send them to black areas for safety reasons I would educate them on why they weren’t being dropped in rich areas, although I would indulge them a couple of times if they insisted.
What do you mean about pineapples?
You on SNAP?
I don’t want tax money going for snacks.
Eat a carrot.
