Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem revealed that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be eliminated.
During a Trump administration cabinet meeting at the White House, Noem spoke about how DHS had increased deportations by 50 percent, and praised the United States Coast Guard for doing “phenomenal work” and breaking “historic records in the amount of drug interdictions” they have “brought in.”
“We are, in the month of March — the last couple of weeks, increased our deportations by 50 percent,” Noem said. “So, we’re now not even just getting the worst of the worst out, we’re making sure that there’s consequences for being here and committing crimes in our communities. And, the numbers are continuing to escalate and to go up…….this week I’m headed down to El Salvador. I’ll be in the prison where we sent TdA members, I’ll be meeting with the president and also Columbia and Mexico and talking about building these relations so that we can continue to get people out of this country that don’t belong here and take them home.”

Noem added that the U.S. Coast Guard’s fleet had been “repositioned” in order to address the fentanyl crisis and to also “go after the southern border” and to secure it.
“The Coast Guard has done phenomenal work — I don’t know if you all have reported on it, but we have broken historic records in the amount of drug interdictions that they have brought in,” Noem added. “We’ve repositioned the fleet to go after the fentanyl crisis and go after the southern border and securing it, and they’ve done amazing work as far as that.”
As Breitbart News reported, during an interview on CNN in February,

Noem said, “I would say, yes, get rid of FEMA the way it exists today, we still need the resources and the funds and the finances to go to people that have these types of disasters, like Hurricane Helene and the fires in California but you need to let the local officials make the decisions on how that is deployed, so it can be deployed much quicker. And we don’t need this bureaucracy that’s picking and choosing winners.”
In January, during an interview with Fox News’s Sean Hannity, Trump criticized FEMA for complicating “everything,” and added that the agency “has not done their job for the last four years.”
Trump added that he would “rather see the states take care of their own problems.”
IIRC, there’s local FEMA and FEDERAL FEMA....why??
I cannot find it, but there was a Playboy article in the early 80s talking about this new agency called FEMA and how it was the blueprint for a police state. I wish I could find it, it all came true in spades.
I wish I could remember who playmate of the month was than I could maybe zero in on the issue.
People in Florida like the debris pickups after hurricanes.
It is my understanding that FEMA is overstaffed.
“much quicker”
The debris contracts are let by the county I believe. FEMA just picks up the tab.
Good choice. They brought it on themselves.
FEMA has been around since the beginning of the Cold War, it’s original propose was not disaster relief, but providing a emergency shelter for the countries leaders in case of some sort of attack, like nuclear war.
Look it up.
I certainly hope so. They screwed over W and gave the rats an opening to pounce on him. Didn’t help with the Brownie doing-a-good-job quote. So when they screw up under Biden it’s up to the FNC’s out there to suggest there’s a pattern.
We don’t need FEMA. The perfect storm has to set itself up. Same with Education.
Until Biden FEMA was doing alright. I am against eliminating it. Some disasters that hit multiple states need more of a response than states alone can provide. I am sure there are other federal agencies which could be done without more readily.

I did. You are wrong.
FEMA + Bleeping Every Middleclass American
I really hope Trump has HIS FEMA agents helping those whose homes were destroyed by the latest round of tornados. BE there and send in many people to help clean up. Give $ to support and hotels till work is done or, if they move, give them a loan at 0% or something.
...and the good people of The Carolinas applaud her!
No, FEMA was created by Jimmy Carter in 1979.
Yes. As one who’s worked in EM, this is good news...sort of.
Each region of the US has its own challenges, regions which should be established with councils who comprise the states in each region, some overlapping for obvious reasons. The councils would comprise existing EM staff of respective state governments, establishing plans and coordinated by a ‘FEMA-like’ office. Coordination ONLY, not response. That’s up to the states (aside from federal $$ aid, etc.).
That’s just a broad stroke, not a blueprint. It’s stupid that each state wastes resources for unique in-state planning when they should be coordinating for regional disasters more than that to which I have been privy in the past.
And dumber that FEMA staff ever thought that they could manage even a single state emergency, proof in the pudding & all...
That stated, given all the talk of the ‘big ones’ on the west coast, I am unaware that any of the 3 states unilaterally established anything but evacuation routes. If Cascadia does occur in my lifetime, not a soul of the public knows where to go. Rather, they teach ‘resilience’ and kick the can to FEMA.
It’s rather pathetic. Flame on.
San Fran and Chicago burnt down and were rebuilt when there was no FEMA; how did they do it???
It should have been Ginger Allen.
Emergencies, and their responses, know no boundaries. A coordinated, multistate, multiagency planning, preparedness and response capability continues to be a prudent need.
That said, when FEMA gets so corrupted that it restricts needed aid to political allies, and (IIRC) sends illegal aliens to lux hotels, then they have to expect consequences.
I would love to see a leaner, more responsive FEMA survive. Hurricanes, fires, earthquakes and other disasters require national-level responses and coordination.
Good idea. FEMA is broke anyway so why feed it more tax dollars to manage incompetently.
